Movie Reviews of Dan in Real Life

Movie Review: Original and Fun
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie has a real feel good atmosphere with excellent acting all-around. Dan, a widowed father goes with his daughters to his parents family reunion. While running some errands in town, he meets a woman in a bookstore who he strikes up a conversation with. Dan is instantly taken by her and after she leaves it looks like he is totally smitten.

When Dan returns to his parents house he starts telling everyone about the woman he met and how he might be in love. Right after Dan's brother brings his latest girlfriend to the reunion and it turns out to be the woman Dan met. This creates a very uncomfortable atmosphere for both Dan and the woman and they must go through several days at the reunion together pretending that they had never met.

The movie really works and it does so in a way that is unique.

Movie Review: Watching a Novel
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the movies that I had to be dragged to in order to see. I normally don't like Steve Carrell's comedy and I thought the premise sounded stupid and predictable. Within ten minutes, I was completely captivated. I have watched this film three times now and each time, I feel like I am somehow watching a novel. As a writer, I responded on such a guttural level. Although there are a couple scenes that seem a touch over the top, the movie does an excellent job of capturing the humanity and fullness of life of each of its characters in a way that is normally only possible in literature, given the time restraint of film. Dan in Real Life allows you to experience the sadness, pain, and insanity of life in a way that lets you see the beauty of it all and leaves with an overwhelming sense of contentment and hope.

Movie Review: Love this film
Summary: 5 Stars

I look at this disc at least 3-4 times a year. The casting and story are great and I love the local setting where I grew up. The special features section really gives you a deeper appreciation of how much fun the cast had making this picture, especially how the cast improvised and helped each other get onboard with the relationships in this story. The subtle, unobtrusive, musical contributions of the young composer are highlighted and should be seen before viewing the film to add richness to the experience. I am not a big fan of the Star's current TV Series, but his improvisation and interaction with this great cast is stunning, especially since he had extremely limited time to prepare and execute this role. I love this film.

Movie Review: Great Family FIlm.
Summary: 5 Stars

I think that this was a really great romantic/family type movie. It show the struggles that arise from Dan (carrell) trying to take care of his 3 daughters by himself. He takes them to the yearly family get together. He meets a beatiful woman in the town that he really connects with only to find out later that it is his brothers girlfriend that he brought to meet the family. What happens next is funny as they try to keep their relationship secret from the family. Acting was great as Carrell and Binoche really connected and worked well together. Again a great fil for the family without all the bad language and sex scenes. It goes to show that a movie can be great without all of that unneeded junk.

Movie Review: Steve Carell like I have NEVER seen before
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is the big break for Steve Carell, as Stranger Than Fiction was for Will Ferrell. It really is tough to put these talented comics in their element wrapped in a screenplay. They can't be boxed up. Robin Williams is another example.

Yet, Carell manages to show comedic restraint and the genius of the filmmaker, Peter Hedges, illuminates brilliantly. Serendipitous music of Sondre Lerche in the movie made me go out and buy a CD of his.

The plot is tightly knot together by hard-to-imagine coincidences. Suspension of disbelief is not stretched beyond reasonable limits.

Enjoy the movie. It's one of the best comedies of 2007.
