Movie Reviews of Damn the Defiant!Movie Review: Guinness multi talented Summary: 5 Stars
I remember seeing this movie as a child & then several times after that until around 1980. Alec Guinness has to be one of the most multi talented actors of all time. His role as a openly loving father at home with his son, to a complete stranger while captain of his ship, is remarkable. Dirk Bogarde plays the perfect villain who you feel like killing. Great acting all around. It's too bad that so many Americans only know of Guinness's Star Wars appearances, his career spans more than forty years of greatness ! Dvd arrived before it was promised in perfect condition, thanks to Amazon.
Movie Review: The Wooden World Summary: 5 Stars
I love stories set in the wooden ship time period. This one is not a disappointment...the battle scenes and the depictment of life on a frigate are very realistic. The battle scenes well done and the characters are fully developed. The tension on board, and the inherent conflict that occurs when the command structure is divided, is explored in a way I have never seen done as well. I think that Guiness and Bogarde are both well cast for their roles. I think that if one is a fan of the Hornblower series this will be a movie you definately should own.
Movie Review: Damn the Defiant! Summary: 5 Stars
This salty, sadly overlooked British entry fires on all cylinders. Lewis Gilbert (who'd go on to direct the original "Alfie" and three Bond entries) displays a sure hand here, with two first-class actors (Guinness and a deliciously hateful Bogarde) crossing verbal swords with gusto, while the always reliable Anthony Quayle organizes the men below. The denouement is worth waiting for, with stunning color footage recreating these beautiful ships in full battle mode. As period war movies go, you'll find this "Defiant" ship-shape indeed.
Movie Review: Damn The Defiant Summary: 5 Stars
6 Sept 09 Sunday: This is one of Alex best movies. He shows his great acting talents to the very best!!!!!!!.. The plot is an excellent showing of the dangers of the abuse of power & the cat-of-nine tails, to open the back-bone. Dirk Borgart is the villian & he plays the part to the hilt!!!!!! It seems WAR never changes!!!! Thank you Amazon.com for your bargin $$$$$$$$ prices. A great British production. Best/Wishes Charles in So. California..
Movie Review: Damn the Defiant Review Summary: 5 Stars
An excellent film about the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, which shows great details of life on an 18th century war ship. This war drama has great acting by all, particularly Alec Guinness and Dirk Bogarde, with fine dialog and well-staged naval battles. The 2.35:1 widescreen DVD (CinemaScope) is enhanced for 16:9 TVs and of high quality.
