Movie Reviews of Damn Yankees

Movie Review: Strange digital audio output
Summary: 4 Stars

Love Gwen Verdon so for this reason alone I recommend this typical fifties movie musical. The "Two Lost Souls" number showcases Verdon's dance capabilities even moreso than her "Whatever Lola Wants" signature song. Tab Hunter is just fine in his portrayl of Joe Hardy. My only carp is that not only is the soundtrack in monaural but when you play it through your digital input on your receiver the sound is routed to the center channel speaker only. I checked my DVD player display and noticed the audio is listed as Dolby Digital 1.0. Now I've seen Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital 2 channel but never Dolby 1.0. Needless to say, hearing the entire movie playing through only the center speaker was a drag so I switched the output from digital to the analogue outputs of my tv and only then got monaural sound from my two front speakers which was a definite improvement. The soundtrack of the movie on CD is in stereo. It's a shame that WB couldn't have used these stereo tracks for the DVD release.

Movie Review: If you like the stage production, you will be disappointed!
Summary: 2 Stars

I was very disappointed. The acting by the principles was fine, but I think the only thing that saved this movie for me was the choreography by Bob Fosse. I think what really turned me off was the omission of a few great songs. The following tunes from the original show were left out - Near To You, We've Got To Think About the Game, A Man Doesn't Know. And Applegate's tune, The Good Old Days, was abridged. A new tune, There's Something About an Empty Chair, was added to replace Near To You, but it was very weak. I wish someone would remake this wonderful show as they've done recently with Music Man and Bye Bye Birdie.

Movie Review: musical magic
Summary: 5 Stars

Thank God for this essentially preserved movie version of the stage hit by one of my all time favorite broadway actresses Gwen Verdon. She just lights up the screen. Bob Fosse's dances are spectacular and the music by Ross and Adler is just classic. They just don't make them like this anymore. Sheer heaven in hell-with the devil played by the incomparable Ray Walston. If you love musicals, you must add this to your collection!!

Movie Review: Whenever I'm Ready For Baseball Season
Summary: 5 Stars

Certain movies really capture the feel of their themes, and this one is the one movie that really captures the magic of Baseball like no other. Of course there is a great moral lesson to be learned. But haven't we learned by now, that the Devil has no good purpose in wanting to help us achieve our goals? I hope so. What a great cast of performers. Nothing was lost from the Broadway stage in this production. And nothing is lost from the movie in this excellent transfer to DVD. Through the magic of Hollywood, when done to perfection, film can even enhance the story. And few have done the job with a Musical as well as this Gem. Thanks largely to the astounding talent of Bob Fosse's choreography. Tab Hunter's shining moment. Gwen Verdon's 'Whatever Lola Wants' is the showstopper, but Ray Walston steals the entire film as an extremely funny Devil. A film favorite for most of my life.

Movie Review: Damn Yankees

i remeber, seeing this movie baasically, when it was first released. and as I have a large collection of musicals, I wanted to add it to my collection, as i had not seen it available in Australia. After viewing Damn Yankees after 40 50 years, was very enjoyable, Gwen Verdon great, and Tab Hunter, yes!
