Movie Reviews of Damn YankeesMovie Review: Shoeless Joe from Hannibal MO Summary: 5 Stars
Based on a Broadway musical this movie tells the story of an aging baseball fan that sells his soul to become a young ball player on his favorite team (Senators).
The younger player Joe Hardy (Tab Hunter) looks for a loophole in the contract. Mr. Appellate "the devil you say" (Ray Walston), tries to distract Joe by dispatching Lola (Gwen Verdon)a female vamp who sings "What Lola Wants, Lola Gets", yet she ends up helping him. The details of the story and the songs make the movie. Naturally some of the songs from the musical did not make it to the movie.

Movie Review: Damn Yankees Summary: 5 Stars
A diverting, tarted-up goof on the scandalous 1919 World Series thrown by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (among others), Abbott and Donen's rousing "Yankees" reunites the graceful Verdon (a flaming redhead, of course!) and mordant Walston from the hit Broadway play. This ballgame is all about entertainment: Verdon belts out Richard Adler and Jerry Ross's splendid songs, like "Whatever Lola Wants" and "Heart," with jazzy authority, while Bob Fosse's vibrant choreography gives her sinfully muscular body a sizzling workout. They don't make 'em like they used to, baseball fans!
Movie Review: GWEN VERDON & BOB FOSSE TOGETHER FOREVER ON SCREEN! Summary: 5 Stars
The wonderful 1958 film version of Gwen Verdon's Broadway smash DAMN YANKEES has finally come to DVD, and it couldn't come too soon. How wonderful that virtually the entire Broadway cast and original score are replicated here for posterity, including Bob Fosse's wonderful choreography.
Tab Hunter replaces Broadway's Stephen Douglass as Joe Hardy, but turns in a terrific performance, maybe one of his best, and makes a perfect foil for Verdon, who lights up the screen.
Don't miss this! It's a gem!
Movie Review: Tab Was Fab Summary: 5 Stars
I agree with the reviewer who thought that Tab Hunter was great in Damn Yankees. I remember seeing this when it came out and thinking...Damn, Hunter CAN act! This was his zenith and I won't have it taken away from him. Of course the whole movie is a whole lot of entertainment. Walston is his usual consummate self and infused with an innate yet tongue-in-cheek deviltry that will disarm you. The highlight of the movie is of course Verdon's rendition of la Lola. Trust me...as an audience 'you'll get what you want'.
Movie Review: Damn Yankees DVD Summary: 5 Stars
I have not watched this show yet. But am sure I will love it. HOWEVER -
A VERY STRAMGE THING HAPPENED. Although I ordered the DVD to be sent to my home (and it was), I received a duplicate copy sent to an office address (company no longer in that office space) and it was forwarded to a P.O. Box for that company and CHARGED TO CREDIT CARD OTHER THAN THE ONE I AUTHORIZED! How could this happen? The credit card company reversed the charge and said I should not send duplicate DVD back. What is going On?
