Movie Reviews of DVD-Fiddle For Kids #1Movie Review: Fiddle for Kids 1 Summary: 4 Stars
Jenny Anne and Luke Bulla are bluegrass fiddlers, and their younger brother Jed, (at the time of the recording at least) is 7 and is learning to play. On the DVD "Fiddle for Kids 1", Jenny Anne and Luke present a few topics on beginning the fiddle, with Jed as their assistant/ model student.
This DVD gives a taste of fiddle playing. Topics covered include:
-Naming the parts of the instrument
-How to hold the instrument and bow (noting the difference between the bow hold they use - with the thumb on the under-side of the frog, and the standard classical violin bow hold)
-Tuning
-Practicing bowing
-The tune "Boil the Cabbage"
You will need some other resources along with this one, as there are a couple of essentials to beginning to play that are left out. (e.g. putting rosin on the bow) and the bit on tuning only tells you how to use the fine tuners (not the pegs). I'd recomende the DVD "Anyone Can Play Violin" (by Coral White) for these things, but most books on playing fiddle/violin should cover them as well.
The booklet that comes with the DVD has info on chosing the right sized instrument, as well as the notes for "Boil the Cabbage" and three extra songs (the tunes that are taught in volume 2).
