Ah! What a movie! A beautiful cast, an excellent movie, a story that will leave you think and re-think the purpose and meaning of life and love. Cyrano de Bergerac is a story of a hidden love, one so deep that the lover gives up his life's happiness to please the woman he adores. This man is the greatest sword fighter in all of France, yet he fights with pain in his heart and despair by his grand nose. The language adds to the eternal and elegant nature of the film. I can't tell which version is better - this one or the original with José Ferrer. Roxanne is a little more intelligent in this Depardieu version. On several levels this rates as an all-around Great Film: comedy, love story, tragedy of war, honor among friends, and verbal wit. There can be no doubt that this is the best film adaptation of Cyrano's story as told by Rostand. The DVD itself is nothing fancy (the only "special feature" is the theatrical trailer), but the video quality is great and the English subtitles are, pedantry aside, fairly decent.

I can see it aging and all but I love this movie. The aging just makes it better in my humble opinion. G. Depardieu has never been this good before nor after as far as I am concerned. This is one of my favorite films. The costume, the delivery of lines, the acting. Wonderful.
