Movie Reviews of Cyrano de Bergerac

Movie Review: Best Adaptation of the Literary Work
Summary: 5 Stars

This multi-award winning 1990 French film is superb in so many respects, not the least of which is its nearly exact replication of the original work of literature. Considered one of the greatest love stories of all time, this movie will appeal to teenagers and adults alike. This DVD in particular offers the original lanugage version of the movie (French) with the option for English subtitles (which actually are Anthony Burgess' translation of the play Cyrano, so they are almost as lyrical as the French dialogue).

Movie Review: Magnifique!
Summary: 5 Stars

This film was absolutely brilliant; it was beautifully shot, superbly cast, and the acting . . . suffice it to say that if you've only seen Depardieu in garbage like Green Card, you've no idea how gifted this man is. He is amazing, and the final scene is just something that has to be seen; it can't be described. For my money, you can never get too much Vincent Perez (again, stick to his French films), and Jean-Claude Petit's score is breathtaking; it's available on CD, but only as an import.

Movie Review: Well done from script to performance
Summary: 5 Stars

Gerard Depardieu always surprises me with his versatility. I don't know why-I've been surprised enough times. His precision performance and sensitive portrayal of a tragic hero make this film something I recommend to anyone who enjoys classics and doesn't mind subtitles or bittersweet conclusions. The film is sprinkled with humor, of course, and with well-written script and good cinematography, this film is a nice film to watch.

Movie Review: Magnificent Filmmaking
Summary: 5 Stars

I have waited for this film in digital format since the day I figured out how to work the remote on my DVD player. What a gorgeous piece of work. Depardieu's Oscar-nominated performance should have been his Oscar-winning performance (with apologies to Jeremy Irons). It is just what you want a movie to be--engaging, escapist, and completely entertaining. One of my top three favorite movies of all time.

Movie Review: An absolute gem
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this movie many years ago, on video tape, and I am so happy that it is finally coming out on DVD.

Like most of the roles that I have seen Gerard acting in, he puts heart & soul into making the movie come alive. This movie is no different.

From every perspective (costumes; acting; direction), this movie is a real winner, and one that you will want to add to your own collection.
