Movie Reviews of Cyrano de Bergerac

Movie Review: An intriguing film, Depardieu's leading role is totally breathtaking
Summary: 5 Stars

It's a film that captures your attention from the first minutes till the end. The dramatic storyline by itself is excellent, but what thrilled me the most in the movie was the poetic, clever dialogs and the outstanding role by Gerard Depardieu which, in my opinion, should have won an Oscar. He really fulled the role as the fighting poetist courageous and fearless in the battle field but so vulnerable and overwhelmed when he has the opportunity to express his emotions to the woman he is affectionate of. Depardieu's ability to express the lyrical lines in a believable way really makes this movie as thrilling as it is. Also, even though there are some scenes from the battlefront, it's a film with a positive attitude towards life.

Movie Review: It's about time they released this on DVD.
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm sure everyone is familiar with the basic premise. The big nosed guy with the soul of a poet loves the girl, but the girl loves the empty-headed guy with the pretty face. But pretty-boy can't do that romantic talk that the girl want's to hear, so big-nose feeds him the words, and.... Well you know the story. It's been done a thousand times in almost as many different ways since Edmond Rostand first put pen to paper all those years ago. But I've never seen it done better than this.

I've watched this film on LaserDisc at least a dozen times, and it holds up very well to repeated viewings. It's really hard to imagine Cyrano done better. Everything about this film is first rate. So what if it's in French?

Movie Review: The most beautiful love story in the french language
Summary: 5 Stars

My girlfriend told me about the movie when it was showing on the theatre. Though it has a five star rating for the American version, it is just not compariable with this one in the french language. First of all, the fencing part is a lot more real than the black and white version. Secondly, french is such an beautiful language to use in expression of love for an romatic movie. Cyrano's love letters are proundly beautiful. After watching this one, I do not have patience to finish the English version at all. This is my most favorite movie among all of my DVD collections and it will stay as number one. I do not know any french, but I can appreciate the making of this movie very much!

Movie Review: Timeless story, excellent acting
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been teaching Cyrano for almost 10 years and this is by far the best version I can imagine. Depardieu's acting is subtle and will leave you breathless - it's so good you'll forget that you're reading the subtitles. I show the VHS to my classes, and it creates the kind of silence in the classroom that only happens when a group is taken out of itself - the story cuts across gender boundaries, age boundaries, and gets even the most cynical hard-edged types to stop and smell the jasmine. Steve Martin's Roxane makes a great companion - seeing this movie will enhance your enjoyment of that movie as well - highly recommended! (And great costumes and music, too!)

Movie Review: a vision of romance and tragedy
Summary: 5 Stars

it has taken some time for this release and it was worth the wait. i first saw this at the movies and now, seeing it again, brings back the memory of romance and tragedy, the beauty and the beast plot and all. it may be in french, but the translation is pretty sufficient and accurate that you not only understand the beautiful poetry that cyrano sprouts, but also the passion that flows with it.

gerard depardieu is fabulous in his role and he clearly made it his movie. the other supporting roles work well too, and it all adds up to make this a feast for the eyes and emotions. i totally recommend this dvd. it's what true love is all about!
