Movie Reviews of Cyrano de Bergerac

Movie Review: Heartbreaking! Such is the fate of the poet.
Summary: 5 Stars

This film is a poem to the enduring pulse of true love and the complex nature of beauty - at once a flickering flame that draws the eyes and then a source of warmth that melts the heart. Cyrano, the poet extraordinaire who's sword is as sharp and fast as his wit, has carried a torch for the beautiful Roxanne as long as can be remembered, the brightness of which has been hiding in the shadow of a grotesque deformity: a large misshapen nose. "I can never be loved even by the ugliest. My nose precedes me by 15 minutes." Like Cyrano, Roxanne is a Romantic where words are windows into the soul, but she's fallen in love with the handsome young musketeer, Christian, who unbeknownst to her, has not the gift for poetry. And so Cyrano becomes the voice of Christian, thus expressing in letterform the depth of his love for her. Roxanne becomes intoxicated, but is blinded by the external beauty of Christian, and remains ignorant of the fact that as her love has grown, Cyrano is really the object of that love. Such is the fate of the poet! Depardieu as Cyrano gives a moving portrayal that is both heartbreaking and heroic.

Movie Review: Cyrano = Depardieu = Magnificent
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful adaptation of the French masterpiece by Rostand, strikingly performed and beautifully filmed. Gerard Depardieu as Cyrano is magnificent. Those watching the movie reading English subtitles are in for a real treat: written by Anthony Burgess, the script is poetic and brilliant. One must always wonder about Roxanne (played by Anne Brochet), who falls in love with the words of love and only circumstantially with the man she thought had uttered them. Is she worthy of the great love and sacrifice offered her by Cyrano, who only reveals the truth to her on the day he's dying, 14 years after the death of the man she thought she loved? His dying soliloquy is masterful, this man who "lived for all and dies unknown," taking with him only his panache. Depardieu is not made to look the freak with a huge nose, which is only mildly extended, and that's a plus. Everything about this production works marvelously, and it's by far the best Cyrano on screen. Steve Martin's modern version, ROXANNE, is also very good, but is much different in outlook and approach. Both are definitely worth a watch.

Movie Review: ""We All Have Our Wounds" ~ A Romantic Film For The Ages
Summary: 5 Stars

Note: French with optional English and Spanish subtitles.

This French language film adaptation of the classic 'Cyrano de Bergerac' released in '90 is without question the most enjoyable 138 minutes in front of the television screen I've experienced in quite some time. Everything about this production is absolute perfection; cinematography, settings, music, screenplay and of course acting.

Gerard Depardieu is an unstoppable force of nature as the eloquent but hot-headed Cyrano. He thunders and rages about one moment only to suddenly turn ethereal and wax poetic the next. The lovely Anne Brochet is a wonderful complement to the blustering Cyrano as his unattainable Roxane and Vincent Perez delivers a strong performance as the handsome but slow tongued Christian.

The dialogue is crisp, textured and witty, however if you're French impaired as I am you'll probably have trouble keeping up with the subtitles. But that's OK, you'll just catch the missing parts the next time you watch and you will definitely watch again and again.

Movie Review: The Ultimate Cyrano
Summary: 5 Stars

Seventy-five years ago, when I was 12 years old, I saw Walter Hampden play Cyrano on a New York stage. Now Depardieu has given me the ultimate Cyrano. The supporting actors also deserve praise, and the entire production merits a place in the top ranks of French cinema. Of course, Rostand's play lacks credibility, but when it is done this well we suspend our disbelief. Even beyond the superb acting, excellent photography and elaborate crowd and battle scenes, this movie's perfection is in the details. The English subtitles are credited to Anthony Burgess of "Clockwork Orange" fame; at the very least they are based on the Burgess translation of the stage version, and offer an Anglophone audience a graceful equivalent of the form, meter and rhyme of Rostand's original French poetry. The background music is noteworthy, but a final touch of perfection could be missed by most viewers. As the credits roll at the end of the film, the background music mirrors the typical closing form of many 17th-century French ballets and operas, and we hear a French Chaconne.

Movie Review: What happened with this denied Oscar for Depardieu ?
Summary: 5 Stars

If Jose Ferrer won more than deservedly the Academy Award , Gerard Depardieu must have received his prize too . In this sense , pitifully a great injustice was done .
The amazing effort made for Jean Paul Rappenau in the rebuilding of the story were simply sublime : artistic direction , photography , superb adaptation and the radiant presence of this billion thousand carats : Gerard Depardieu made of this film a strong candidate to win a great number of Prizes .
But what it happened is part of a very sad story .
In my personal opinion , Depardieu has made five unforgettable films in this order: Danton , Cyrano , Tartufe , Jean de Florette and Novecento .
So when you acquire this issue you will have something much more important than a simple movie ; you will take your home a glorious masterpiece of the French Cinema .
