Movie Reviews of Cube

Movie Review: Low budget and sci-fi at its best
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me start out this review by starting with questions. What is cube?Where is the cube? What is the purpose of the cube? Who made the cube? How big is the cube? Is there a way out? Cube is about a group of six people who wake up in this cube looking for a way out. Each person has theirr strengths and weaknesses. I sum up cube as six lab mice are put in a huge maze (with square rooms some with traps) as part of some scientific experiment is this the answer? Your cast consists of a doctor, an engineer, an escape artist, student, a cop, and an autistic all who just want one thing to escape, but maybe just maybe one of them knows more than they are telling. Who is it and what do they know? Great suspense, the cast seems real, unique traps, a must buy or at least rent( rent at least once you may be surprised how good it is if you give it a chance) because it may not be for everyone. Some thinking is required to see the solutions to the maze. and I am not telling if anyone gets out cause I don't want to spoil this movie and I want to watch it again. Don't let this low budget movie pass you buy, just cause it is a low budget movie doesn't mean it is no good in fact it is even better than some of the big budget movies out there.Cube is one movie that isn't square. Movie Review: Worst movie I have ever loved
Summary: 5 Stars

Here is a movie that has been described as "not nearly as clever as it thinks it is". The acting is terrible, the dialog is hackish... and yet I was thoroughly entertained. It defies reason; I am very picky about the movies I consider "classics". Okay, maybe I'm even a bit of a film snob. So by all rights this little Canadian indy should have been forgotten the minute I saw it, instead of being inducted into my very short list of favorites.

Of course it is rife with cringe-worthy moments like bad lines and broken logic (the math scenes are so hilariously trite that anyone with a kindergarten education will choke on their chips), but somehow this doesn't ruin the overall integrity of the film. I think that all filmakers should watch this movie as an exercise in tight pacing and good suspense. The latter is so well done that it carries the whole film and overshadows the shortcomings to a point where you almost don't care to let them bother you (note *almost*).

A note of warning: do not watch the prequil or the sequils. They are contrived and confusing, and only serve to complicate an otherwise intreguing story. They contain all of the bad elements from the first Cube movie with none of the stuff that made it so great.

Movie Review: incredible
Summary: 5 Stars

The way I discovered this film is that I was looking for a T.V. short from "68" about a man traped inside a white cube he is constantly visited by people telling him "your never going to get out of here" the show was called THE CUBE Jim Henson was involved. This movie turned up during my search. It sounded mildly fermiliar and I decided that it was worth a look. I watch a lot of movies but rarely am I this excited about one as I was this one I have recomended it to most everyone. I could not beleive that some one could make an action film that takes place in virtually one room where a good part of the dialoque is about mathimatics. Think Indian Jones at home with Albert Einstein. I felt that the film makers were laughing at any one that has ever said action films are for television addicts that have never had a thought of there own. The movie is character driven and pacts quite a few plot twists that will surprise. Vicenzo Natali is the director of this film. And his name is one to remember the way you may have done with Stephen Speilberg when you saw JAWS or George Lucas when you saw AMERICAN GRAFFITTI. The man that could successfully put this high concept film together is a true artist.

Movie Review: excellent Canadian effort
Summary: 5 Stars

First up, it's the guy from "Pin"!! David Hewlett?!? --something like that?? It's just nice seeing this guy again :) Second, CUBE is a great movie--all the more better cuz it's a Canadian film injecting a little life into the misunderstood and mistreated/commercialized horror genre (ie. Scream X, I Know Who You Did--I mean--What You Did Last Summer, The Faculty, even Silence of the Lambs, any big budget Hollywood "effort"). Third, premise pays homage to the great Rod Serling/Twilight Zone (the original stuff, NOT the updated 80's/90's ****) legacy...asking cool "what if <this> and <that> happened" questions and letting the story go from there.

To get an idea of where modern horror is going, check out "Habit" and "No Telling" by Larry Fessenden..."Evil Dead Trap" by Toshiharu Ikeda is kinda cool too, but it's not really available yet--just "nudge-nudge-wink-wink" your clerk at the nearest alternative video store. Hmmmm...what else?? I dunno...STAY AWAY from all the shot-on-video attempts at horror..."The Dead Next Door" is probably the best of the shot-on-video independent stuff--but that's not saying much at all...

Movie Review: Strange, But Cool
Summary: 5 Stars

"Cube" isn't one of the highest budget movies. The whole thing pretty much takes place in a cube-shaped room... attached to other, identical cube-shaped rooms. No major names. Pretty simple plot.

But I really never get tired of watching it. It's one of those movies you can put on when you're not really sure what you want to watch and always know you'll have a good time. (Fortress is another of those movies I enjoy - kinda cheesy, but lots of fun.)

The idea is, basically, that a seemingly random group of people wake up in this booby-trapped cube. The story is them working out how to escape and figuring out why they're in there to begin with.

Simple, kind of strange, but very cool. It gets better when you see Cube 2 - Hypercube and Cube Zero because those start fleshing out the Cube "universe" - why people might show up in the cube, etc. All three are great, but you have to see the original first.
