Movie Reviews of Cube Zero

Movie Review: A success in the Cube series
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay, first of all I don't need to tell you that this prequel isn't as good as the original. You should know that, even if you haven't seen it. That point has been over-said enough. But what I can tell you is that Cube Zero offers a much needed breath of fresh in air in the Cube series.
After Cube 2: Hypercube, I have to admit that I was alittle skeptical in renting Cube Zero. I guess I was just afraid of another rehashed version of the first one. Cube 2 just had upgraded special effects and really nothing interesting or new to add to the idea. Cube Zero succeeds in everything Cube 2 failed at.
Cube Zero offers a really interesting storyline that takes you outside the Cube (but not too far) and into the minds of two technicians that watch and monitor people inside the cube. After so long, one of them is eaten up by the guilt and all the unanswerable questions surrounding the cube, and decides to venture inside the cube himself to try and help out the surviving people inside.
What I liked about the story to Cube Zero was that it gaves us some much needed answers surrounding its purpose and where it came from, but does it in such a way that it doesn't take away from any of the mystery or eeriness that the original film did for it. Even after everything that Cube Zero explains, I can still watch Cube and be just as satisified with it. Cube Zero ruins nothing that the original film did. Plus, the ending to the film is just great, as it explains something from the first film that intrigued me for so many years.
In addition to all that, if your a gore fan Cube Zero is probably the goriest Cube film, and its death sequences with the traps are just spectacular and original. And the acting is plausible.
In ending, Cube Zero is definitely worth seeing for any Cube fan that was disappointed with Cube 2.

Movie Review: Deeper than you think...
Summary: 4 Stars

There are two Truths about the Cube: Everyone wakes up with the same questions (Who am I? and Why am I here?) and everyone dies in the Cube. Some last longer than others, and some are killed by their fellow Cubists, but in the end the Cube always wins. Everybody who enters the cube dies in it, and usually in horrifying ways. Nobody gets out alive. Ever. Well, there might be one exception...

The Cube is a metaphore for Life, or the World, or Human Existance. We're all here on earth with the same questions, and we all die in the end. The key to the movie is at the exit scene: "Do you believe in God?" - "What kind of God would do this to people?!?" *bzzzt* Wrong answer. Burned alive in hell. But what would happen if someone said yes? Barbarash leaves this question unanswered and open to our own interpretations...

While I do not agree with Barbarash's conclusions and I'm really not into slasher/horror flicks I really did like this movie. I don't think it'll ever be considered a great film by anyone, but I like movies that have deeper meanings (Donnie Darko or The Ninth Configuration) that are not readily apparent and this one took me a day to figure out. Ultimately, Cube Zero is an inditement against God: He either does not exist, or he's a sadist taking pleasure in tormenting people. This is a common view, but just as far off base as those who think that God is nothing but Love - He is both Holy and Just AND Love and Mercy. He is also not impressed that people simply 'believe in Him' or acknowledge His existance, but for the sake of the movie Barbarash's vision works.

Please note I did NOT see either Cube or Hypercube first, and I am reviewing this one as a standalone movie. I will definitely check them out based on seeing this one, though.

Movie Review: A must see, especially if you have seen the first 2.
Summary: 4 Stars

Take Cube 1 and 2, combine them, and you get this movie. It's better than the second but not as good as the first. The genius aspect of the original Cube was how the story could be debated by and left people wondering and gathering their own conclusions while at the same time remaining a very interesting and not hard to understand movie. This movie however supposedly happens before Cube and creates a story for you to attempt to explain Cube.

In Cube Zero one of the lower end cube operators begins to wonder and ask the wrong questions. The more he learns the more he questions the cube, and eventually ends up inside of it. The whole story of the movie is served to you with a silver spoon and while it's fun while watching, after the movie ends you forget it as if you never seen it. Definitely does not have the impact effect of Cube after seeing it.

Even though lacking the genius of the original Cube this movie does have quite an interesting story, lots of neat special effects, and awesome traps just waiting to claim their victims. In my opinion it's definitely worth watching, especially if you have seen the first 2 of the series.

Movie Review: Cube vs. Cube Zero, torn between which is better!?!
Summary: 4 Stars

Simply put: Cube focuses on "unwillingly" particpants/prisoners in a crazed game and Cube Zero zooms in on the makers of the same crazed game. What Cube Zero also offers, to those who missed out on the first Cube, is insight on the particpants/prisoners as they crawl thru this maze of deadly rooms. Although Cube was a thrill to watch, it does tend to get annoying as the characters begin to bicker and turn on each other. Cube Zero jumps from makers to participants preventing the characters from being worn out. You are also given the reason these people were put into these rooms where Cube just throws us into the maze and offers no explanation as to how and why these people have been imprisoned. In vain, that mystery is what makes Cube so intriquing. Both endings are breathtaking and make the whole first 80 mintutes completely worth watching.

Movie Review: The Cube Sequel You Were Waiting For...
Summary: 4 Stars

The title of my review really sums it up. This is the "Cube" (1997) sequel you wanted instead of getting "HyperCube" (2003). We saw the inside of the Cube throughout the whole first film. After watching the original didn't you want to know more about the cube? Who's on the outside doing all of this? Yes, sometimes it's best not to touch the unknown in some films, but that obviously was the mistake that HyperCube made by just giving us more inside the cube and a very vague ending outside the cube.

Cube Zero not only gives us the in Cube action that we liked so much in the original... but it also answers those questions about what the cube is and who's on the outside looking in... or are they?
