Movie Reviews of Cube 2 - HypercubeMovie Review: SF? Horror? Summary: 3 Stars
I'm not quite sure which this wanted to be - and it might not have been sure, either. It starts as a sequel to Cube, which I found to be suspenseful and at least mildly original. This starts the same way, with a band of strangers thrown together in some kind of sadistic maze. Except for the "maze" part, that seems to be a lot of horror movies get going. So, in addition to being a sequel, it's going to need more than originality to get it going, since it has so little.
Instead, it has overblown characters: the dotty old lady (with a secret), the nervous blind girl (with a secret), the caring therapist (with a secret), and the guy with a knife (and a secret, or at least a psychotic side). I'll try to avoid spoilers, but this falls into the sequel's common pattern of trying to do more of everything than the original. For example, the original killed off most of its characters. This also kills off most characters, but kills them more.
The original had low-budget charm, whether or not it actually had a low budget. This owes more to effects, but keeps some of the original's ambiguity. For one thing it's ambiguous about being a horror film (not horrible enough) or SF flick (not SF-ish enough). Still, it's watchable enough, if that's the kind of thing you watch.

Movie Review: Good... but something just seems to be missing. Summary: 3 Stars
I really liked the whole concept behind Cube 2. The whole idea of multiple dimensions and parallel universes was quite cool, although I think the thing that made Cube 1 better was that it was more credible; more possible. One big flaw with Cube 2 is that they used all the same types of character profiles as in Cube 1. Also there was nothing in this movie that really had me sitting on the edge of my seat in suspence like the sound activated room in Cube 1 did. I kind of liked the ending of this one though because it leaves you waiting for Cube 3, but it would have been nice to have a little more information about what this device was; like, perhaps, a revelation earlier in the movie that there actually was a device in the first place would have been good. As it is, it seems a little like it was something the writers just chucked in there at the last minute to shabbily create some kind of cliff-hanger. All in all though, if you're a fan of Cube 1, I would recommend getting Cube 2 because it does have something to offer to the overall storyline behind the Cube series. And for what it's worth, the ending achieved it's objective: I am eagerly awaiting Cube 3.
Movie Review: Just fair...the first was much better Summary: 3 Stars
I could spend a lot of time talking about the whys and hows of my statement to see the first one, but that the second is a very spare reminder of that first, but what would be the point? While not a terrible movie on its own, Hypercube simply didn't deliver what the first one did. In the first movie, you found yourself in the Cube with these people and you felt both their terror and your own. You didn't know when you might be sliced, diced and canaried. All you knew was that it could happen without warning and despite the best defenses you could mount. The tension built and was satisfactorily surmounted by the ending. It was elegant and cool and everything that lies there. The second had none of the fear, little of tension and despite killing characters, an uneasy requirement to suspend disbelief. 'I just saw that guy get killed...why's he climbing out the other side of the Cube?" There were a few interesting ideas, but thats kind of where it stopped. Having said that...if the filmmakers are reading this...make a Cube 3 would you? I'd certainly pay to see it, but please go back and watch the first over to see why it was so neat.
Movie Review: Nice to get a sequel, but the acting disappoints Summary: 3 Stars
Still wondering who built the Cube from the first movie? You get somewhat of an answer in this sequel. The downside is that you have to suffer through 90 minutes of some excruciating stock characters. And there are at least two actors in the film who, either due to the stiff dialogue they have to recite or due to the limitations of their one-dimensional characters, are painful to watch. But the lead in the film, Canadian actress Kari Matchett, is both very good and very cute, so that took some of the sting away. She's got great dimples, that Kari! Other than that, many elements of the first film are repeated here: rooms with unpredictable traps or characteristics, the rapid breakdown of civility, and murder. Some brief behind-the-scenes featurettes are included, some more mind-numbingly technical than others. All in all, not a TOTALLY satisfying film, but a more than decent attempt to take the original story to a different level and conclusion. Probably not worth purchasing, but absolutely worth renting if you liked the first film.
Movie Review: No more suspense... Summary: 3 Stars
Do not expect any suspense or horror from this movie. You will mostly find discussions on math, physics, and multiple/parallel dimensions. There are only a few traps that are followed with long pauses where the characters try to figure out everything. And most of the characters are copies from the first Cube, like the guy that goes crazy and kills everyone. The graphics were kind of embarassing to watch, the acting was pretty good, and the ending was a setup for a third cube, but what this movie needed was more traps and more excitement. It even seemed that the characters were bored in this movie at some points! Overall, a pretty good movie. You just have to make yourself get into these mathematical discussions the characters have. There just wasn't any suspense when they moved from room to room that the first Cube had. They should have had the first director do this film!
