Movie Reviews of Cube 2 - HypercubeMovie Review: much like the first, imagination will set this movie free Summary: 4 Stars
If you liked the first one, it may have been because of what you couldn't see. The absence of any knowledge about the experimentors made you literally create your own villain(s). It was brilliant idea mixed with some good effects and acting, and it worked out well, so this time we get a little more info on our villains which is why I think some reviewers are not liking Cube II. Remember, the first wasn't a flashy movie either, but a fantastic story with good elements that was done on a cheap budget and turned a penny, hence sequel. Cube II could not have been done any better, they had to radically change the idea for an interesting plot which they successfully did with Hypercube; a four dimensional cube with a possible 60 million rooms and no one knows if the fourth dimension is time or alternate realities, but there are doubles, triples and quadruples of the same person running around rooms that change by spatially folding into and out-of one another. Cool, eh? Right, the killing devices were not of the same calibre as in the first, but I'm not convinced about the need for them, as I will spoil later. There were devices, but they seemed to come about as properties of the hypercube, instead of actual killing machines. It's really up to you, which is the beauty of it. ...
Movie Review: A cool thought experiment of a movie Summary: 4 Stars
Although this movie is a sequal and suffers a little because of this, it does take the original premise of Cube to new levels (literally and metaphorically). I enjoyed the thought experiment aspect of the movie - what would it be like to be inside a hypercube where alternative realities can exist simultaneously and where the physical laws of time and space can be changed just as easily as the rooms inside the cube? This movie is probably more enjoyable to those familiar with a the multiple-universe interpretation of quantum mechanics, as the hypercube is a physical embodiment of many alternative universes overlayed on top of each other - leading to many bizarre and cool interactions between them in the movie. In the first movie (Cube) the complexity of the trap comes from the combinatorial complexity of the rooms moving around - like being trapped inside a continuously shuffling rubic cube. In the second movie (Hypercube) the complexity comes from the vastly more complex combinatorial complexity of all the alternative universes interacting with each other. The movie is better than some of the reviews here would have you believe - if you liked the first movie its definately worth a look.
Movie Review: DON'T READ THOSE LOW-RATING REVIEWS... Summary: 4 Stars
This is not a movie reviewing site!!! Not a single one of these folks "made sure to focus their comments on the DVD edition of Cube 2"!!! so let's be honest here... If you're reading this, it's because you're already interested in the CUBE series, and you want to know if it's worth 'buying them' on DVD or not. Period. Last thing you want is someone re-categorizing it to the "psychological thrillers" genre or trying to prove their "sequels-stink-theory" or simply telling you it's a bad movie.
Cube 2: Hypercube (the DVD edition) deserves a 4 star rating because overall it has pretty good audio (Dolby Digital, not Ultra Stereo) and video (presented in Widescreen format) quality (thing it's predecessor DVD edition kind of lacked) and a good dose of special features like it's predecessor, however, it doesn't carry easter eggs! (Haven't found any on Cube 2 DVD so far)
Now, if you ask me, Cube 2: Hypercube (the motion picture) deserves a 4 star rating because it not just DELIVERS, it EXPANDS. Period. Acting far surpasses what we see in CUBE and I'm still trying to figure out that 'even-more-shocking-than-the-first-Cube-ending'...
Movie Review: Better than most of the negative reviews here give Summary: 4 Stars
I have to say I rather enjoyed this movie.
I did see the first Cube movie, and enjoyed that A LOT. So I wasn't exactly expecting greatness going into Cube 2 - I mean, it's basically the same movie as the first one, right? It takes place in a cube that doesn't change it's sets, right?
For me there were enough differences and additions that made it work for me. Although I did feel as they introduced characters in this movie that I was saying "OK, now how will this one play out in the finalae of the movie", as I had seen the first one, and realized each had a part.
Cube 2 had more special effects than the first one did, as there were things inside the rooms that required them - plus the floaty sex scene was kind of bizarre.
My point in all this rambling is that I enjoyed it, and I tried to convey that feeling without giving away the movie, which I hate when reviews do. If you don't go into it expecting a cinematic masterpiece, you'll probably enjoy it for what it is, which is what I did.
Movie Review: Saw it first Summary: 4 Stars
I actually saw this one on the Sci-Fi Channel in 2002 before I saw the original. I thought at that time it was just a Sci-Fi made movie, which explained for the peculiar sets and the strange goings on. I caught it about halfway through, and for some reason continued to watch. The ending had me scratching my head for days. I forgot about it until I found the original on a top horror list site. Then I came here to "scope it out" if you will just as I do most movies before I buy them. It was then that I was reintroduced to the Hypercube. I went out and bought all three Cube movies and had a marathon. This one is more high budget than the first, but still an interesting entry in the series. It takes on a more Sci-Fi feel than the sheer terror and unease of the first movie. It's definitely worth a watch if you want something a little different while slightly warped and far out.
I say one thumb up for oddly enough holding a memory for me.
