Movie Reviews of Cry FreedomMovie Review: Old Favorite on Dvd Summary: 5 Stars
What a treat to see this beautiful film on dvd. I had seen it on vhs years ago, and recently found and read BIKO by Donald Woods, on which the film was based. The movie stays very close to the book.
For those interested, the book delves much deeper into Biko's life and character, and gives a good summarized history of South Africa. The book also gives more information about the transformation of Woods from a liberal to an activist and the development of their friendship.
Denzel's performance is top notch, and the music moving. You will have a lump in your throat at the end. I found the movie even more enjoyable after reading the book and seeing it on dvd.
Movie Review: One of the best movies I've seen Summary: 5 Stars
... I'll tell you the truth about this movie. It's not the kind of thing you just pick up at the video store and say to yourself "now that looks like a good movie." I was forced to watch it at first by my history teacher, at which point I fell in love with it. It's a wonderful depiction of the past situation in South Africa. If you want a good perspective of what Apartheid Africa was like, as well as a beautiful story about freedom and the triumph of the human spirit, this is your movie. ...
Movie Review: "A Sense Of Our Own" ~ Apartheid And The Rise Of Black Consciousness In South Africa Summary: 5 Stars
Richard Attenborough's '87 release `Cry Freedom' is a classic retelling of the true account of the life and death of civil rights activist Steven Biko (Denziel Washington) and the valiant effort to tell his story to the world by newspaperman Donald Woods (Kevin Kline). The story and portrayals are poignant, riveting and thought provoking. This is a film that definitely belongs next to another Attenborough masterpiece in your DVD collection, `Gandhi.'
Movie Review: Excellent film Summary: 5 Stars
This is a really well done film about South Africa, apartheid and Stephen Biko. Kevin Kline really is great in this film and probably out shines Denzel Washington who is supposed to be the star. There is a very real energy to this film about some very serious issues and dangerous situations. There are many tense scenes in the film and it is a story that needed to be told and told well, this film succeeds.
Movie Review: Honest and Powerful. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a difficult show to watch, but one that compels you to stay with it until the end. We are studying African history currently in one of our competitive academic teams, and this one left all of us, my students included, speechless. This is a must watch, but be prepared to have some silent reflection time afterwards.
