Movie Reviews of Cry FreedomMovie Review: Freedomania Summary: 5 Stars
Let it be admitted, it was the music by Van Gelis which prompted me to buy this DVD. I'm more than merely happy that it did. 'Tis a wonderful movie, but one which drew tears that mankind can be so deceitful and uncaring. A short time ago while doing voluntary work in Lincoln, UK., I found that I was linked with a fellow worker, whose home is in Ghana. She is now - at her request - my adoptive daughter and although home in Ghana, keeps in constant touch with me. We have learned to love each other, and, as I have told her, there is no "black and white" there is merely humanity.
Such an attitude is made clear in "Cry Freedom" as well as the understandable weakness that also exists and is displayed, initially, by the editor's wife, although later she makes a full recovery !
After watching the film, I looked up information concerning Donald Woods on the internet, and was saddened to learn he is no longer with us. The world is a poorer place --- as it is without the likes of Steve Biko, a wonderful man. God willing, this is the sort of film which will, in the future, make such things as vicious oppression and separation of the races an absolute impossibility. My parents were Irish, and I am fully aware of what oppression means. I am more than m,erely glad that I heard the music and felt impelled to see "Cry Freedom" - a wonderful film.

Movie Review: CRY FREEDOM Summary: 5 Stars
Based on a true story and book by the same name the film starts out in 1975 in South Africa with the police raiding a black township and destroying almost the entire village along with killing and wounding many residents. Donald Woods, a liberal newspaper editor, captures some of the photos of the raid and publishes them along with a piece about Steve Biko, the black activist leader, accusing him of reverse racism. A black woman medical doctor manages to get thru to Woods and challenges him to personally meet Biko and see if he is really racist. Woods accepts the challenge and begins a friendship between two unlikely people in apartheid South Africa. Both men eventually must put their lives and families' lives at risk in the cause of overturning apartheid. Another one of several outstanding films portraying the struggle of blacks in South Africa for the freedom and dignity so many of us took for granted. The cinematography and music are outstanding along with Denzel Washington. Can be viewed by the whole family except younger children. Enjoy!
Movie Review: a response to Tom Keogh Summary: 5 Stars
Mr Keogh claims that this movie is only semi-successful because its focus shifts halfway through to focus on Donald Woods' attempt to escape South Africa. I do not think that this is a flaw in the film, though, because the film was based upon Woods' writings about both Steve Biko AND his escape from South Africa. The movie was not intended to be simply a biopic about Biko, because it was based upon the work that Woods wrote.I watched this film in an African Philosphy course in which we read some of Biko's own work and personally, I feel that the entire film is a wonderful film. It is true that the emphasis does shift to Donald Woods' escape, but the scene where he is looking down on South Africa from the airplane that then shifts to the protest/massacre of school children is both beutifally stirring (the protest) and utterly horrific (the massacre that then esues). To anyone interested in human rights or the struggles agains Apartheid that Biko helped contribute to, I would recommend this movie highly.
Movie Review: incredible Summary: 5 Stars
I am sad to say that I disappointed myself by only watching half of this movie. I had to watch it in my World Lit class and of course, being a senior, I had the attitude that I didn't want to watch something that was filmed before i was even born, plus I wanted to sleep :P, after watching it for three days with more than an hour left of the movie, I decided to pay attention. The last half was so good! I felt so bad that I missed the whole first half, because I was left somewhat confused as to who the characters were. I've heard that the beginning of the movie is far better than the second, so if I was actually interested in the last half, Im sure I would have loved the first. I read someone's review where they said something about it not being a movie you'd grab at the movie store based on the cover, or something about it not being interesting looking, which I completely agree with, but it truely is. Denzel did an awesome job. Now my only problem is that I have to B.S. a paper summarizing the movie [:
Movie Review: Cry Freedom Summary: 5 Stars
Whether it is historically incorrect or not the story of this movie was more than moving. Denzel Washington fits so well into the characters shoes which is Stephen Biko. Biko was a black man, an ambitious, envious personality who opposed then south african government and became a I-don't-care anti-apartheid activist. Biko is more than lucky to have a friend, a white man who is conscious and empathic journalist, Donald Woods, and who stands behind all Biko's activities and by this Biko gained more popularity.Anyways it doesn't take long for the south african government to get rido of Biko forever and it is then when the white man D.Woods has to sacrifice his beautiful life in South Africa in order to reveal the truth to the world about Biko's murder. A great movie by all means. Biko and Woods are two people that I'll never forget for their brave hearts.
