Movie Reviews of Cruxshadows - ShadowboxMovie Review: Loved it... Summary: 4 Stars
I really WANTED to give this a 5, but it's not perfect so I can't.
There are a few "extras" that are great :-) and worth the effort to find them.
There are 4 videos on here. This was the one part of the DVD I was expecting a little more from. The Cruxshadows go above and beyond for their music, albums, live shows, so I was expecting too much I guess. I loved the video for "Edge of the World", though.
The live footage, interviews and featurettes were more than I hoped for, too.
This is a MUST buy for any fan of CXS. It's worth it alone for just the EP with ForeverLast on it. I highly recommend it.
Movie Review: Fans only! Summary: 3 Stars
`Shadowbox' is a catch-all video collection from the popular electro-gothic band The Cruxshadows. The centerpiece is a nine-song live performance in Leipzig, Germany. I saw the band live several years ago at a small club in Philadelphia (I hadn't even known who they were at the time), and it was a lot of fun. Watching them at home isn't quite the same. Lead singer Rogue wears a headset so he is free to roam the venue as he's singing and he does so frequently. As most of their music is programmed, it is essentially a one-man show, though violinist Rachel McDonnell occasionally comes to the forefront to play. In addition, there are two dancers, which I've always seen as an admission that one's live show is boring, a last-ditch effort to spice it up. I'm sure being there was a great experience, but that feeling is lost on home video. The other problem is that all the songs chosen sound pretty much the same. After a while, Rogue's antics become repetitive as well. The music is fine, but I found myself growing bored watching.
The other main attraction is four music videos. These are very much home-grown productions and have nothing to do with the actual songs. (One video features the band performing in front of - and through the magic of editing, participating in - the 1959 film `Teenagers From Outer Space' (!)) In the end, I'd rather just listen to the music. The one good video is actually hidden beneath one of the menu's central symbols: "Open Your Eyes" by The Dreamside is included because Rogue contributes vocals and appears in the video. While it's still not as polished as something you might see on MTV, it is leagues better than the band's own videos, and it is far more entertaining. This video also appears on The Dreamside's album `Spin Moon Magic' as well as the recent various artists `Sleepwatching' DVD, either of which would make a better purchase than this one.
There are a couple additional live performances (a single song each) from an outdoor festival, which I found more enjoyable to watch than the main concert, probably because everything wasn't shrouded in fog. There is an interview with three of the band members, and a lot of "scrapbook" footage: still snapshots, video tour diaries and the like.
Though there is a lot of material here, most of it is pretty mediocre and of little interest. I really like this band, and I do recommend buying their CDs and seeing them live, but I couldn't recommend this DVD for any but the most die-hard fans, if at all.
