Movie Reviews of Cruxshadows - Shadowbox

Movie Review: This band is amazing
Summary: 5 Stars

I was turned on to this band when a friend recommended Cruxshadows to me after a friend recommended the band to him. Word of mouth is the strongest advertising/recommendation these guys have, and that's just WRONG! Rogue has written over 100 songs over the past 12 years, each one a journey into myth and archetype. His compositions are transporting, I use them daily as inspiration since I'm a graphic designer who needs to stay "between the worlds" in order to create for our agency's clients.

Shadowbox is a gift from Cruxshadows to their fans, and the love shows. We're invited into a world of mundanity (touring), excitement (touring) and imagination (concert and videos). The bonus track of Rogue performing in another band's video is entertaining: all he needs is his sincerity and his voice to get his message across, while the other band needs a fog machine, brooding sets and makeup, and the ever-present 'sell it with sex appeal' veneer. Give me "just Rogue" any day.

A word has to be said about Rachel, the Yamaha violinist. I hope that Rogue knows what a treasure he has in her and will use her more if she's willing. Her stage presence is as strong as his own, and that's saying A LOT, since Cruxshadows concerts are definitely "the Rogue show." As lead singer, front man, composer, keyboards programmer of EVERYTHING, Rogue carries a lot of responsibility and displays an intimidating amount of talent. Cruxshadows is his baby, but Rachel adds layers to a very special child. Song tracks are made richer and more 'angsty' with the addition of Rachel's violin... I don't know how else to describe it. Not just in Shadowbox - where I was able to see the band perform for the first time - but in every CD she's on. "After All" is the first song I heard with her contribution: the gypsy/Celtic violin track hooked me for good.

If you buy Shadowbox and just listen/watch, you'll be hooked too. Rogue writes for his music to be danced to, and he never disappoints. "Foreverlast" is my personal favorite, and Dragonfly is exquisite no matter what the mix. "Edge of the World" is featured in a video, in the concert, and on the CD, it was great to see Rogue's interpretation of it in two different mediums.

My least favorite was "...Only Sleep", the idea and the lyrics are solid and I believe they must be close to Rogue's heart (it's hard to be left behind by a loved one who has died), but the melody just didn't work for me. It seemed too upbeat for the message it carried. As Rogue is fond of remixes, I'm hoping "...Only Sleep" gets another melody in future releases because the song deserves something better, something more mournful and dark than the bright violin and piano tracks it's been given.

But I love the DVD and CD collectively. It was great to see the band behind the scenes. If you can't get to a concert this is definitely the next best thing.

Movie Review: Of course it's good...it's the CRUXSHADOWS!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just got this DVD today. I ALMOST gave it four stars because it lacks my favorite song by them- Heaven's Gaze. It's annoying when bands put something out that has three versions of one song but don't include their other great songs. I thought the concert would be longer than it was, nine songs seems short... Okay after having said that I think all the other stuff on here makes it deserving of a hundred stars. Everything CXS does is golden. And I agree that Rachel is irreplaceable. The best CXS songs are the ones with lots of violin. I hope they stick with that element of their music and not go to far into the "electro" genre. I have to vehemently disagree that the Dreamside video is better than the CXS ones. While the song is great (of course, Rogue is singing in it)... the video is horrendous! I can't even describe why...it's just too cheesy to describe.lol. I'll just say it's definately cheesy, while the CXS's videos are great, especially Winterborn and Dragonfly. One of the best parts of this is the footage of Rogue singing with the crowd after their power was cut off. Awesome! BUY THIS DVD! :)

Movie Review: Exceptional
Summary: 5 Stars

Have you heard of the Cruxshadows before? Yes? Then what you are you waiting for - you should have already ordered this by now. No? Now's a great time to start.

The main attraction of the DVD, the live concert, is excellent. It -did- feel a bit short, though I'm sure part of that is just my overall excitement at watching it, but the performance was excellent and the cameramen captured the highlights very well. The interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and commentaries are all very well done, and they even let you peer into the heads of some of the CXS members (shocking, no?). The videos are decently done - not quite as good as the live concert, in my opinion, but still well worth having. Finally, the EP CD that comes with the package is a great addition to anyone's collection.

If you've never heard (or heard of) the Cruxshadows before, give them a try with this. You won't be disappointed.

Movie Review: Wonderful
Summary: 5 Stars

I love the live concert and am very happy they used footage from an inside venue. I know most other fans are like me and miss the concerts most of all when the band is off tour/not in their area; and the DVD's live extras are awesome.
The interview is interesting, it seemed very unrehearsed which is more of a rarity with most bands than you would expect. The tour impressions section and slideshow are great off stage extras.
Its definatly worth the $20 and you cant beat that it comes with a decent length CD with two new songs; which are different from the usual CXS sound but are great none the less.
Even if you're not too familiar with the band, its a great DVD. Every CXS fan should own one.

Movie Review: Long-awaited DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

I was extremely pleased when I heard the Cruxshadows were making a DVD with live music, videos, interviews, and an audio CD. My husband and I have been fans for about 2 years now and I can say, without reservation, that Cruxshadows is the best live show I've ever seen! Who else will sing parts of the concert from within the crowd? Who else climbs the light scaffolding or balconies whenever possible? If it is at all possible, see them live, if not, get the DVD and enjoy being almost there. Not quite as good, but better than nothing.
