Movie Reviews of Cruxshadows - Shadowbox

Movie Review: Experience The Cruxshadows
Summary: 5 Stars

The Cruxshadows are probably best known for their live show. So to say I was thrilled when I found out they were releasing a live concert DVD would have been an understatement!! *It's worth buying this DVD for the concert alone.* But the Cruxshadows have never settled for just the expected, so what we get is Shadowbox: A live concert, several music videos, a band interview, a tour documentary, a festival documentary, a slideshow, an extra live song, plus 2 easter eggs AND the CD which has 2 new songs and a bunch of remixes.

So to the fan that reviewed and said she "expected more"... ::BONK!:: This is an amazing amount of material. And for about $20? I must be dreamin'!

The DVD:

Live concert: Filmed in Leipzig in front of a pretty large audience. Let's face it, nothing beats being right there during a Cruxshadows concert, but this is certainly the next best thing. I was impressed with the quality and the way they were able to capture the experience. The color and sound are great (although the vocals waver in volume once or twice, its authentic).

Videos: They are "Dragonfly", "Winterborn", "Edge of the World" and "Cruelty". "Cruelty" is the same as the one on the Paradox Addendum EP, but its nice to have it in DVD format. EofW is my favorite, I love how they used an old sci-fi movie with Rachel and George as people from outerspace. Plus, the fast/slow movement distortion effect with Rogue is so cool, it give me chills. "Dragonfly" is my 2nd favorite. They chose some beautiful outdoor settings, plus I liked the scenes with firelight and the symbolism with the chase. "Winterborn" used some live footage, which worked well with this song, all in all well done.

Interviews: I thought there was a contest months ago involving questions that got asked on the DVD? If so, there's no mention of that. But the questions are pretty good... some serious, some light-hearted. It's very casual with Rogue, Jessica and George sitting on a couch. If you're a big fan you'll know some of this stuff already (like the meaning of the Cruxshadows symbol), other things you may not (like video games they play or the food they like). I wanted more more more... but that's because I'm a rabid fan and I could listen to Rogue talk forever...

Tour Documentary & Festival Snapshots: I group this together because they are both video of touring and behind the scenes stuff... Both are surprisingly long, with a good deal of it being the band members sightseeing or goofing off. You get a better idea of what touring is like and how they interact with each other. In short, after watching these, I felt so much *closer* to the band.

Slideshow: Again, this is a good deal of photos. I actually wish it would have gone a little faster, frame to frame. But these are fun too. (There seems to be a running joke involving chewed up food? LOL.) And most of these are casual, like looking at a friend's photo album.

There's also the live performance of Resist/R and two easter eggs, well worth finding, as others have pointed out.

Audio CD:

The highlight of the CD is the new track "Foreverlast" and the two other versions of it. Just, wow. This is a great song, takes up right where they left off. My next favorite would be the beautiful Conjure One remix of "Dragonfly". The other new track "...Only Sleep" is a melodic slower song, and left me a little puzzled at first, different from their usual style in that its kinda...normal? But its growing on me. Not a big fan of the Skinny Puppy remix of "Edge of the World", but I'm sure other fans will like it, so that's fine.

All I can say is, The Cruxshadows are one of the most popular darkwave bands for a reason. And this DVD encompasses the reasons why they have such a dedicated fanbase. Not only a MUST for fans, but would actually be a great intro to the band. Can't really say anything more, you just have to experience it. **Highly recommended**
