Movie Reviews of Crocodile DundeeMovie Review: Time For A Reappraisal? Summary: 5 Stars
This film is not considered 'cool' these days due mainly, I think, to lazy TV schedulers who will run a butchered version of the film on Sunday afternoons because it's a 'good family film'. I've caught this film on TV about four times and on each occasion it was in a badly cut version but this DVD seems, so far as I can tell, to be complete. The film deserves to be put alongside the best comedies of any era and should be regarded as one of the prime examples of the form(I would compare it to Capra at his best).
I was lucky enough to see this film at the cinema, knowing no more about it at the time, than that it was supposed to be a good comedy. Well it turned out to be a very good comedy indeed. The film offers so much more than just some very funny moments though. Everyone I know who saw it at the time loved it and it was no surprise that it became one of the years biggest hits. It is strong in all areas, well written and directed with good chemistry between the leading actors and an excellent cast who all perform their parts to perfection. Hogan stands out of course and had the difficult task of throwing off the tag 'Australia's answer to Benny Hill' something he manages effortlessly.
It's difficult to realise now how much of a 'breath of fresh air' it was at the time since Hollywood immediately co-opted (or stole) so much of the style and approach of the film for its own projects in the following years.
The film quite naturally divides into two parts. The first in Australia
has a surprising depth to it and a real feel for the place(the Outback)and its people and of course you get to know the characters. The second part of the film is in New York and provides the bulk of the humour but still remains character focused and never descends into pointless gag-making.
It manages to be hilariously funny one moment and sweetly touching the next. Put simply the film is a delight and a joy to watch and can be seen many times without tiring of it.
Movie Review: Get on the right side of the road, dopey! Summary: 5 Stars
CROCODILE DUNDEE (1986) was not only Paul Hogan's official 'global' film debut - it was also a super smash hit in its day. It continues to be an absolute classic favorite today, and as I have stated in my review for the third movie in the series, it is a perennial favorite of my family's. It was one of my mother's favorite films.
Everyone knows the adventures of Mick "Crocodile" Dundee, the Bushman and Outbacker who comes to America because he likes the frumpy blonde reporter (Linda Kozlowski, a bit more bright and chipper here) who has come to interview him. Croc's good mates Walt Reilly (the great John Meillon) and Aborigine Neville Bell (David Gulpilil) round out the delightful Aussie cast (obviously I excluded a few). Walkabout Creek (shot in McKinlay, Queensland), well, everyone has their own Walkabout Creek I daresay ....
Further shooting there was done at The Federal Hotel in McKinlay and UDP Falls, Kakadu National Park, all in the Northern Territory.
The shots of Australian Outback country - such as it is - really moves us all, especially because it reminded my parents of home and me too, a little bit, since I summered where my parents were born. The humor is 100% Hogan and brilliant as any of the old classic comedians who inspired Hogan. Who can forget Croc's Bowie knife, as Croc says to a thug, "That's not a knife ... THIS is a knife!"
What sickens me is that Paul Hogan has only done six major films if you don't count the Croc movies: ALMOST AN ANGEL, LIGHTNING JACK, FLIPPER, FLOATING AWAY, STRANGE BEDFELLOWS (vid. my review) and CHARLIE AND BOOTS. Also vid. my review of Crocodile Dundee III. Hogan is a wasted talent, sidelined quickly into sidekick status and it BLOWS. This man should have at least six Oscars, and dozens of scripts awaiting him on his desk!
That is my private take on this movie anyway. You're either a right dopey pelican or an extraterrestrial if you haven't even seen it once.
Movie Review: Likable Paul Hogan and lovely Linda Kozlowski in a FUN adventure Summary: 5 Stars
Linda Kozlowski plays a reporter who goes to the Australian Outback to do a story on Mick "Crocodile" Dundee, Played by Paul Hogan. She gets a good taste of Dundee's simple Tarzan-like life in the wilderness and decides to invite him to New York City. Dundee is a fish-out-of-water in the big city, of course, but it doesn't take him long to adapt, and the New Yorkers love him. Linda and Dundee naturally start to fall in love despite the fact that she has an arrogant fiance.
"Crocodile Dundee" was released in 1986 and spawned two sequels in 1988 and 2001. It successfully combines 3 genres or themes -- romantic comedy, adventure and fish-out-of-water.
What makes the film work so well is the simple charisma of Paul Hogan. You'll likely never experience a more likable protagonist. On top of this, Linda Kozlowski is both likable and lovely, possessing an attractive spirituality and intelligence.
Paul and Linda have great chemistry. The chemistry is real seeing as how they would marry four years later in 1990. This is funny in light of the fact that one of Roger Ebert's main criticisms of the film was their supposed lack of chemistry. I love Roger Ebert. He's a great writer and critic, but he obviously missed it big on this one!
"Crocodile Dundee" was the most successful Australian film ever. It only runs about 90 minutes before the credits start. This is great because romantic comedies like "Dundee" are light fare; there's simply no reason to go much longer than an hour and a half. In other words, "Dundee" doesn't overstay its welcome.

Movie Review: How one can use sheer human ingenuity to outsmart...to survive in the outbacks as well as in the concrete jungle! Summary: 5 Stars
I have watched all the three Crocodile Dundee movies in the theatre as well as their re-runs on cable TV at home:
- Crocodile Dundee I;
- Crocodile Dundee II;
- Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles:
I am very impressed by the hilarious antics of Mike Dundee (Paul Hogan). I also like his down-to-earth character.
What I have enjoyed most in watching the three movies is that, I have learned that one can use sheer human ingenuity & creativity to overcome obstacles, no matter how intimidating they are...some life-threatening ones, too!
Just watch how Mike Dundee (sometimes with his side-kick) out-thinking all the predators &/or bad guys in all three movies...in the treacherous hot outbacks of Australia & the mean streets of New York [When a mugger poked a small knife in front of his face, Mike took out his jungle knife & said: "That's not a knife. This is a knife!]...& mercilessly cold concrete jungle of Los Angeles.
On the whole, I have enjoyed watching again all the three movies, each with its own engaging story & romantic notion of adventure.
As a strategy consultant/success coach on life (survival) skills, I have added these three movies to my resource repertoire.
