Movie Reviews of Crimes and MisdemeanorsMovie Review: Morality As A Stumbling Block And Pragmatism As Redemption Summary: 5 Stars
A great film! Crimes and Misdemeanors is Woody Allen's ultra in-depth exploration (or is it an analysis) of morality, conscience, pragmatism, the all-seeing---or not---eye of G-d, ego, accomplishment, inner identity, secrets, obsession, murder, and above all else the inter-relationships that surround every living person, no matter how much of an island in the ocean that person may think himself to be. Imagine Crime And Punishment set in 1989 Manhattan with the infringement coming against predominantly Jewish ethics and you begin to grasp the outer weave of this equally buoyant and heavy fable. Crime and Misdemeanors is among the most well-cast and thoughtful movies of the entire 1980's.
Movie Review: My favorite Woody Allen film Summary: 5 Stars
Simply put, a terrific movie and Allen's masterpiece. At once funny, troubling, romantic, hopeful, sad... Allen manages to both sypathize with and damn the characters in both stories. Interesting plot, truly great acting, and a screenplay that makes you think about the common themes of Allen's work (death, humor, love, identity, etc.) in new ways.
I'm writing this after years of watching and re-watching because I just saw Match Point, which horribly cribs this movie's characters and plot and marries them with bad acting and a terrible screenplay. Sadly, Match Point was heralded as Allen's best film in years. Wha?
Movie Review: Crimes and Misdemeanors Summary: 5 Stars
This funny, intelligent drama trails two pairs of Manhattan men who couldn't be more different: Judah is an emblem of respectability and brother Jack's a wise-guy realist, while Cliff and Lester represent the divergent aims of art and commercialism, respectively. Alternating between the moral melodrama of the first tale, and the witty romantic comedy of the second, Allen launches his finest work of the '80s, cleverly considering questions of ethics and integrity with levity and nebbishy introspection. Crisply directed and finely acted (Alda, Landau, and Huston are especially good), you'll want to do some time with "Crimes."
Movie Review: Woody at his best ! Summary: 5 Stars
This picture, along with "Hannah and her Sisters" and "Zelig" are, to this date, Woody's best films. Well, you can add "Radio Days" and "The purple rose of Cairo" to the list. It's a "to see you is to love you" kind of film. The screenplay is as polished as it can be, the cast shines throughout and you'll leave the theatre with the feeling (very rare theese days) that yu've seen a great movie. No wonder the crew gave a round of standing applause after some scenes were shot.
Moving, funny, cinical and very, very humane, it's not to be missed.
Movie Review: www.sportofdistraction.com Summary: 5 Stars
Classic Woody Allen, and by that I mean a classic tale of intertwining lives meeting the moral crossroads on several levels.
My wife says all of his movies are the same, and it breaks my heart everytime she says it...because in that blanket analysis, the analyst misses the incredible stories and crafty dialogue that takes place in the many Woody Allen movies that pretty much take place within the same template. In any event, "Crimes..." is a wonderful flic, don't miss it.
