Movie Reviews of Crimes and Misdemeanors

Movie Review: A brilliant film about the nature of guilt and judgement
Summary: 5 Stars

Deeply moving, deeply though-provoking, brilliantly acted and occasionally very funny. A disturbing, dark film about human nature that still manages to leave room for a glimmer of hope within it's chilling bleakness.

Martin Landau is amazing, but all of the cast make significant contributions.

One of the few films I can watch over and over, with no loss of its power. Every time I watch it I end up pondering my own sense of morality, my questions about whether there is truly justice in the world, and the extent to which good people do bad things. And yet, along with all those heavy ideas, this is also entertaining, witty, and occasionally very tense story-telling of the first order.

For me it's second only to 'Annie Hall' amongst Allen's huge body of work, and stands as one of the few truly great films of the 1980s.

Movie Review: One of Woody's best
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a superb film. In essence there are 2 main overlapping parts and few smaller subplots.
One part revolves around the guilt of Martin Landau, who has never been better. This section is Woody Allen in Bergman mode and doing it very well.
The second section is Alan Alda and Woody Allen fighting over Mia Farrow. This contains some classic Woody Allen lines which once heard you won't forget. Alan Alda's "If it bends its funny..." and "Comedy is tragedy plus time". Woody Allen finding out that Prof Levy (his hero and who he is making a TV docu about) has killed himself leaving a note that justs says "I've gone out the window".
The film comments on a number of very serious moral issues but still manages to be funny and entertaining at the same time. This is the DVD equivilent of the unputdownable book.

Movie Review: Choose your life
Summary: 5 Stars

I've watched Woody Allen's "Crimes and Misdemeanors" perhaps 10 times since the movie was released. I consider it an outstanding film for several reasons. First, the underlying moral questions are profound. See the flashback scene, for example, to the Seder dinner. Listen to the conversation and reflect on the questions raised. Second, the acting is superb, especially by Landau and Houston, but all the characters are memorable. Third, the dialogue combines humor and seriousness is a way rarely seen in American films. Fourth, the sound track is refreshingly sophisticated, combining big band classics with Schubert. Fifth, the construction of the story is well-balanced, juxtaposing different characters and their dilemmas, but always moving toward the ending. This is no "Hollywood Movie." Wm. Paul McKane

Movie Review: Powerfully intelligent film
Summary: 5 Stars

This is not a typical Woody Allen film in that it has an overall seriously philosophical quality. The performance of Martin Landau as a successful opthamolgist who is morally conflicted is one of the most moving and grounded Film performances I have ever seen. He is just magnificent in this movie. Allen deftly weaves Landau's story together with another thread featuring Allen as a documentary film maker who is unhappily married. His brother-in - law is an obnoxious televison producer played to great effect by Alan Alda. This film raises questions of morality , faithfulness and does so in a way that leaves the viewer to think through these issues as the characters go trough their respective moral crises. There are some laughs included but for the most part this is serious filmmaking at it's best.

Movie Review: Near The Top Of The 'Woody List'
Summary: 5 Stars

Crimes and Misdemeanors is my favorite of Woody Allen's dramas and it is a drama. If you're looking for pure comedy, look elsewhere. There is funny stuff here, but this is something different.

Woody is wonderful as usual but he steps back and gives center stage to Alan Alda & Martin Landau who are magnificent. I never get tired of seeing Landau at work and his tortured character making (or not) impossible decisions in impossible situations is seeing a master at work. Maybe the standout performance here though is turned in by Anjelica Huston, playing the extremely dramatic girlfriend of Landau.

This is so good that for once it's even easy to ignore Mia Farrow and her usual wooden, flat and standard performance. Don't miss out on this excellent film from a master of his craft.
