Movie Reviews of Crazy People

Movie Review: A potent mix of comment and comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a deceptive film. Upon launching it, you might think it'll be nonstop laughter and silliness--especially when you see Dudley Moore tear the cellphone out of another driver's hands and toss it into the river. The humor works. It's over the top. But that's perfectly in keeping with things: all advertising is over the top.

The social comment works, too, displaying the evils of greed as well as the abuse of power and position. There's a lot of truth in this film, and it applies to all those human situations where the few administer the many. To see political commentary in this film requires no stretch of the imagination. When the master of the asylum pulls the reins, he is no different from any number of heads of state who, for the sake of their own power, keep their people in chains.

The salient point of the film is that things are not always what they seem. I suppose many films aim at stating that truth; this one simply forces you to consider who the genuinely crazy are. It may suggest to you that much in life which we accept without thinking does deserve a more careful analysis (notice how happy all the crazy people are and how miserable the ad execs are) Beyond that, the film is touching in a number of ways, with skillful performances by all the talent within. "Crazy People" is a real sleeper and lots of fun. Once you've seen it, you will forever thereafter look at advertising--and many other facets of life-- through much saner eyes.

Movie Review: Hysterically Funny "Glimpse" of Ad Biz Life - "The Office" of the Ad Biz
Summary: 5 Stars

Hello. Absolutely one of the funniest movies I've ever seen dealing with the advertising business. Dudley Moore plays Emory, a burned-out ad exec who decides he doesn't want to manipulate consumers any more. In a burst of creative flurry, he creates a series of campaign ads for his clients (I won't list them here and be a spoiler, but they are laugh-out-loud funny). His "Truth in Advertising" backfires on him when his boss has him committed to a mental asylum, figuring he's had a nervous breakdown.

Not to be daunted by the set-back, Emory gets all of the residents at the asylum working on ad campaigns for him and the results are hysterically funny. For anyone who is in the marketing or advertising business, it's hysterical - the fact that mental asylum residents can produce more effective ads than most of the art directors at the agency is a riot.

Only 2 cautions - first, this movie is not for kids (due to language and some sexuality). Second, it's from the 80's, so younger folks may not appreciate the advertising humor as much. For anyone who remembers the 80's, this movie is a riot. I highly recommend it if you want a good laugh!

P.S. Hello. (See the movie, you'll understand)

I can't imagine it not being in my collection. Always good for smiles. I got a mint used copy from an Amazon "marketplace" supplier. Widescreen, too.
