Movie Reviews of Cradle Will Rock

Movie Review: Made no sense!
Summary: 2 Stars

This movie was confusing. It sets up a wonderful beginning with a bunch of people ( a playwright, a prostitute, a millionare, etc.),and you expect them to link together somehow before the end of the film, but they don't. The writer of this film needs to be shot, but it was directed beautifully. also every actor and actress dilivered a wonderful performance. If it helps any it would have been great if I could have made any sense out of it! :)

Movie Review: Dull
Summary: 1 Stars

First, the good points. There are many good actors in this film--or, to put it better, actors who have turned in fine performances in other films. The production is pretty good, the film looks great (especially on DVD) and the edits are crisp and keep the story moving along. What else. Nothing else. The problem with the film is that it tells a story without establishing a character-driven narrative thrust. Part of the problem lies in the director's hands. He cuts so quickly that meaning never arises out of a scene. It's too jumpy. There are a few film-schools tricks thrown in to remind you that, yes, Tim Robbins has learned the technical stuff. The script is as dull and colorless as film writing gets. There is a tonal problem--obviously, the intent is to tell a serious story about politics and theater in the 1930s, but there are semi-humorous asides thrown in, the movie can't quite take itself seriously enough. The characters are one-dimensional, and the acting consists of reading the lines fast, I guess because people spoke fast in 1930s movies? Who knows. A total lack of insight or cleverness, except of the self-conscious variety, render the dialogue flat. The acting--well, the fellow who plays Orson Welles is so bad he destroys the scenes he's in, and I gather the character is pivotal. John Cusack seems asleep. Bill Murray is forced into a role that must have made him long for Rushmore (a five-star film, by the way). I had the sense that an agenda was driving this piece. But the thesis for the agenda is never fleshed out. And the fleshing out is, after all, what the movie should be. A truly bad and boring film, despite the glossy production values and ostensibly worthy cast. Forgot one thing: the music is just plain awful. Utterly tuneless, in fact, quite irritating. Critics praised the film, as they do almost any period piece, but I am sure "Cradle Will Rock" will tip into oblivion rather quickly.

Movie Review: Cradle Will NOT Rock
Summary: 1 Stars

Cradle Will Rock, released in 1999, is a film about finding a balance between art and politics, as well as artists fighting in what they believe is right. Artists are influenced by issues in everyday life, which in this movie is dealing with unions, the government, and the Great Depression. The film tried to show that even though we are all tempted by different types of prostitution or exploitation, we all can remain pure by standing in what we believe in and stand against the evil vices we encounter. During a time of struggle, the artists in the movie (actors, painters, ventriloquists, etc.) stood up for what they believed in. They spoke the truth of the corruption in politics and society. This message is deep, yet I don't think the movie as a whole did a good job of tying it all together at the end to really portray this strong message.

Basically there were too many plots and sub plots interwoven in this film. There isn't a main protagonist and you don't get to connect on a personal level with any of the characters because there are so many of them. Also, this film is very confusing and hard to follow. Not a must see hit. It's a waste of 132 minutes.

Movie Review: Tim, Go Back to Bull Durham
Summary: 1 Stars

Tim Robbins started well, and accurately in his Hollywood career. As a shallow, not too perceptive, but upcoming pitcher, he learned finesse in the art of empty sports cliche from Kevin Costner in Bull Durham. It worked within and without that film for Robbins' character. Apparently someone else helped him out with the art of empty, juvenile Marxist cliche for his directorial career and he's ridden it ever since to a fair deal of critical plaudits which are as well merited as the pitcher's interview fodder. Somehow, I couldn't miss the comparison with Miller's far more competent work in The Crucible which, makes the leftist argument in a far more sensible, literate and effective manner. More pointedly, Miller takes the rational side of the controversy he describes, unlike Robbins who seems to embrace the political superstitions of the Thirties long after the adult world has abandoned them. When all is said and done, I couldn't help but see this product as little more than a melodrama for benighted Marxists, replete with hissing the villain and cheering the protagonist. Save your time and money.

Movie Review: i guess we wont be seeing a film version of "juno" or "reuben reuben" in the near future
Summary: 1 Stars

tim robbins is oh so right in his political points of view; its a damn shame that hes such an amateurish actor and (here) director. he manages here to trivialize one of the most memorable moments of mid-20th century american theater, and to portray as buffoons a number of persons of vastly greater talent than tim robbins, among them orson welles, john houseman, and marc blitzstein. (not to even mention the hatchet job on nelson rockefeller, who was portrayed far more fairly in "frida", arising from the same incident -- hmm, i guess i DID mention it). the film is sophomoric and replete with ham performances from alot of actors who should know better, with only bill murray acquitting himself well. and most annoying of all is the scant amount of the blitzstein score that is used, further proof of mr robbins trusting his own talents ahead of those of a genuine artist. one of the worst movies ive seen in a long time.
