Movie Reviews of Cowboy Bebop - The Movie

Movie Review: The Great Debate
Summary: 5 Stars

When I saw Spike die in the last episode I knew it was the best ending ever, but I guiltily wanted more adventures. More Ed. More Ein. More of the old Faye. Those were good times. Here's your chance to get some of that, in nothing short of a spectacular two-hour roller-coaster ride.

It would seem that if you are a Bebop fan you either love or hate this movie, and both make good points for their opinions. On one side people say it goes against everything the series stood for, and the others say it is the very embodyment of Bebop's style. I would obviously agree with the latter, but I understand where the rest are coming from.

First, you should know going in it will be a little different. It's not going to have Tank! at the begining, it doesn't involve Vicious or cyndicates, and it's a pretty heavy storyline for something that doesn't take place in the series. It's also a little uncharacteristic as to magnitude of the story instead of the short, in the shadows kind of adventures they normally have. That being said...

It's still the Bebop we've all come to know and love. There's lovable Ed, Ein, the same Spike, Faye, and Jet that are developed in the series. The character developement for the secondaries is in a very Bebop fashion, and the feel of the universe they live in is the same. Needless to say, the music is fantastic, though it's a little more intense. Awesome, all the same.

Watch it with the intention to enjoy it.

Cheers.
Joe

Movie Review: That series is crazy, this movies crazy man.
Summary: 5 Stars

I had watched this movie about a month after I got dvd 2. Right away I was confused at Spike's voice. However I noticed the base was turned up, and it sounds awesome. As I watched I realized they used the same American voices, which is great. Great action, right from the start. There is a little too much talking, but great action. The movie is supposedly taken place right before hard luck woman, as I have read somewhere. I have seen the whole series now, and yes, it could fit there. It defintely takes place after dvd 2 and before hardluck woman, so you can come up with your own instance, it's all the same. The bounty on the guy is suppose to be the biggest ever, yet it isn't what intrests you, because you know they never get the bountys. Anyways, the movie does a nice job.

The characters stay true to the way they are in the series. There is the crazy Ed, and such, the rest of them are all great. I think if I saw this movie after I had seen the series I would not have enjoyed it as much, but it truly shines by the end. They show one of the coolest spaceship battles in the whole series. Then we see probably the best hand to hand fight since "Asteroid Blues". It lasts long, and has plenty of jaw spitting kicks. Plus it is in the "Rain".

Sound works well, lots of base. If you have a sub-wolfer it should sound pretty nice. Not alot of extras, but you're here for the movie right. I would suggest buying it if you are a CBebop fan. Otherwise, it may not be as great to you.

Movie Review: Absolutely Fabulous.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I watch it every Otaku Friday. (Otaku Friday is a holiday my friend and I made up, the last friday of every month. We watch anime, read manga, eat pocky, and generally be especially geeky.)

The animation is beautiful. More so than in the series, even. I must admit, I'm partial to the parts where Faye is in Vincent's apartment-thing. Why? The lighting is great, and Faye's hair looked incredible. (^_^;) I'm always inexplicably amazed by how great the parade looks. I haven't a clue why, maybe it's the light; I really like afternoon sunlight. I've been trying to find a screenshot of the scene around the middle (I think) where it's just the city, looking *very* cool.

The music, as expected, was eargasmic. I especially loved the ending theme, 'Gotta' Knock A Little Harder.' The track played during Faye's first scene in the movie, 'Cosmic Dare,' was very fun, and so was 'Pushing the Sky,' played when the airplanes were flying. Also, I loved 'What Planet Is This?!', which was played during a very fun spaceship chase/fight scene.

The story was engaging. I'm in love with the whole idea, and they did a very good job 'telling' it.

I know people who have seen the movie and didn't even know that the series existed. That says a lot for the movie. It's not only good on the merits of the series; It really is great all on it's own.

If you enjoy enjoying things... You should buy this.

Movie Review: An outsanding movie based on an excellent show
Summary: 5 Stars

When Cowboy Bebop ended, many touted it as being one of the best, if not THE best anime to ever come about. The show was so popular that a movie reuniting the cast for one more adventure was inevitable!

Taking place sometime between the Sessions 'Cowboy Funk' and 'Hard Luck Woman', Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door is basically like watching a two hour session of Bebop. The animation quality is much better and clearer than it is on the show, and the plot is pretty good. Main villain 'Vincent' is a very cool character and one of my favorites from the entire Bebop series, movie or not. All of the voice actors reprise their roles, and throughout the movie there are lots of little references to previous Sessions. Some may notice Andy, the Space Cowboy turned Space Samurai in the Halloween parade scene. The soundtrack for the film is great, a blend of music from the show and a whole new soundtrack.

Overall I found the movie to be good, and a welcome addition to the Bebop collection. Even though its not really furthering the story or development of any character, since the movie was made after the show was already over, its still 2 more hours of Bebop, and there's nothing wrong with that! While it would've been nice to see a movie-based prequel to Bebop, maybe detailing Spike's involvement with the Syndicate, this movie was just basically a really good, longer Session. This is something that any Bebop fan can enjoy.

Movie Review: Yoko Kanno's music is intact.
Summary: 5 Stars

Normally, I wouldn't waste anybody's time by adding yet another "Cowboy Bebop rocks" review. But someone has falsely posted that the American version of the movie has some "terrible rock" instead of Yoko KANNO's excellent music.

Let me set the record straight here: the English dub of the movie keeps Yoko KANNO's original music COMPLETELY INTACT. I have also watched the movie in both its forms, the original Japanese version (downloaded) and the American version (in theatres).

The thing is, there have been rumors floating around the web for well over a year that Columbia-TriStar was replacing Yoko KANNO's music with some American rock. Many doubted the validity of the rumor, but the rumor persisted. And obviously, the rumor has been completely discredited now, after the movie's American theatrical release. If you heard any rumors about the music being replaced, then you can safely disregard them as false rumors.

As for the movie itself, the English dub is excellent (and I generally dislike dubs), and, as if anybody needed to tell you, Cowboy Bebop rocks, and the movie rocks. The only negative thing I can say about the movie is that it is a tad long, weakening the momentum and the pacing of the film. Still, that doesn't keep me from wholeheartedly recommending the movie.

Just don't listen to anybody who says that the "American version ruined the music." It is simply not true.
