Movie Reviews of Cowboy Bebop - The Movie

Movie Review: Best movie released in the U.S. this year.
Summary: 5 Stars

Matrix Reloaded? Garbage. Hulk? Confusing. X-2? Sloppy. Terminator 3? Bearable, at best. No, the "must-see," movie for summer came out during April, a little film entitled, "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie," which was originally titled "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," during its 2001 Japanese release(the same year Cowboy Bebop debuted on U.S. television) is nothing short of a spectacle. While 2002 yielded the U.S. release of the somewhat confusing "Escaflowne," film and the HIGHLY overrated "Spirited Away," things are looking great with this flick. The story, which is set between episodes 22(Cowboy Funk) and 23(Brain Scratch), has Spike and the gang now searching for a bio-terrorist who goes by the name of Vincent. Faye, impulsive as she is, tries to go after him on her own and winds up getting captured. Spike winds up getting crossing paths with a mysterious organization that has to do with Vincent, particulary with Vincent's past lover Elektra. I'm not going to give much away, but I must say, the ending is just awesome to watch. The fight scene at the end between Spike and Vincent is beautiful, and with the theme "Touching the Sky," playing in the background it just sets this very unparallel mood. Best of all, unlike a certain action movie series which will remain nameless(Cough* Matrix* Cough), the fights are much more believable. The characters actually react to getting hit by each other, they don't just punch each other for thousands of times unflinching, and then after its all over seem to keel over in pain. Take my advice, this is the movie for the year, and would be a much better choice for 2003's best animated film Oscar than that piece of crud Finding Nemo.

Movie Review: Great film, a must have for your collection!
Summary: 5 Stars

To put it simply, this a must have for any movie buff, not to mention the legion of Cowboy Bebop fans who fell in love with the series like I have. I know that all of the loyal fans don't need a review to tell them that this is a great movie, but even with that I have to say this movie lives up to and surpasses the bar set by the series. The animation is crisp and beautiful; the soundtrack is quirky and rich in dept and style. When you watch the movie you'll be spellbound by the uniqueness of its visuals and how great everything looks and feels. There's never a dull moment, from action to suspense this movie delivers on every aspect.

The movie takes place around the 21st - 23rd (Just my guess!) episode of the series, and like the series it doesn't rely on you knowing what happen in previous episodes. It's self-contained and there is no reliance to the storylines of the series. Spike, Faye, Jet, Edward and Ein get themselves involved in another adventure that only leads to more trouble for the bebop crew. When a terrorist threatens the lives of all the planet's inhabitants the only ones that can save the day and prevent the disaster is of course the crew of the bebop. The movie keeps everything you loved in the series and expands it to a longer format, the same voice actors and the overall tone and setting of the series stays intact. The added length of a movie has given Watanabe the ability to explore more of Spike's personality, you get to see a different side of Spike and get a better sense of his feelings for Julia.

There are countless things to love about the movie and I hope that the casual moviegoer gives it a chance, because it deserves to be seen by more than just us anime lovers.

Movie Review: Even if you hate anime.
Summary: 5 Stars

I was never a big fan of anime. Ever since Sailor Moon and Speed Racer and the rest of the classic anime began airing on television, I began to avoid the whole concept of anime completely. Whenever I was urged to watch an anime by friends who claimed it was amazing, I always felt I had wasted my time when I did watch an episode. Then, a friend of mine asked me to watch the Cowboy Bebop movie, promising that if I didn't like it, he'll never ask me to watch another anime, so I agreed, and I haven't stopped thanking him.

Anyone, save a pacifist, who watches this movie is going to love it. It follows the path of 4 bounty hunters going after a bio terrorist for a large sum of money. The first thing I noticed is that these guys weren't trying to save the world like the cliche anime heroes I hate, in fact, it was exactly the opposite. They don't care what happens to the world, as long as they make some money in the end. You get a sense of realism when watching Bebop, and it comes with a sense of cool that is unmatched by almost any American series.

The characters are simply incredible, it's difficult not to get attached to at least one of them, and the depth of the story only adds to the action filled exterior. The villian is maniacle, the heroes don't give a damn, and the action, music, and animation are to die for. It doesn't matter if you haven't watched the series, and it doesn't matter what prejudices you have against cartoons and anime, because you can go into this movie with all those prejudices and still love it. If I can enjoy this movie, then so can you.

Movie Review: The Most Fun $...Can Buy This Summer
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll be honest - I am a Cowboy Bebop fanatic. Therefore, my review will sound a little biased. Bear with me.

First things first - this movie is not for kids. This movie is, however, for two different groups of people: Your anime haters and anime lovers.

Haters! Listen to me and listen well. This movie will forever change your view on anime. It will make you stop thinking that you're watching cartoons and start feeling like a real, live action movie. This is adult anime fare at its finest. Filled with incredible, pulse-pounding action backed up by fantastic music and a very solid plot line - this movie is what anime was meant to be. If you think the world of anime is all about Dragon Balls and Pokemon, you owe it to yourself to see the other side of this wonderful art form. While this movie doesn't share the same fantasy-style qualities of, say, a Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) film, this is about as close to an adult sci-fi action drama as you can get. But this movie didn't just graze the high mark, it hit the mark "Prince Of Thieves" style, splitting the arrow of ignorant smack-talk right in half. Pop the corn, and crank the 5.1 up to 11, because your night just got good. And pick up the TV series on DVD while you're at it, they go hand in hand. You'll thank me (immensely) later.

Lovers! You probably downloaded the Japanese subtitled version like I did way back in 2001. So the only thing I need to say is this - pay the piper, and pick up the DVD. Even though chances are, you all are probably the ones who already preordered. :o)

Movie Review: An absolutely perfect addition to the series.
Summary: 5 Stars

Truth be told, I was kinda bummed out with the last episode of Cowboy Bebop (the last scene of Blake 7, a Sci-Fi BBC series I remember watching as a kid, kept replaying through my head :( ). I had bought the Amazon "box" set sight unseen, never having actually seen any episodes, but it is certainly fun and definitely worth the money (lol, even my 47 year old mother is digging it), but I did feel a bit bleah, wanting more in-depth development... However, when I saw this pending release a few weeks ago, I said - why not? Just finished watching it, and boy - what a fun film! If fits in seamlessly with the entire series' tone, texture, emotion, and eventho its ALOT cleaner graphically speaking, it flows without a hitch in design and settings (although, truth be told, as much as I loved the opening movie's music montage of city life on Mars, it seemed a bit more mundane as depicted in the series - but that could just be me) Even if you haven't watched any of Cowboy Bebop, definitely check out this one... its how my mom got hooked. She walked in while it was playing, saw about 10 seconds of it, and then borrowed my entire set... and she has zero experience with animation of any type outside of American Disney gush. LOL Oh, and one last bit of advice - if you end up watching the whole thing for the first time, series and movie together, watch the movie after Session 5 and then watch Session 6. The movie will add a new level to seeing Session 6... wish I had done so, so I wouldn't have felt so bummed out... ;p

Boy, hope they keep coming with more... :)
