Movie Reviews of Cowboy Bebop - The MovieMovie Review: Cowboy Up With The Crew of the Bebop Summary: 5 Stars
After the success of Cowboy Bebop series in both Japan and America, the next logical step was a movie. The series told the story of four bounty hunters aboard an old fishing ship named the Bebop that was converted into a spacecraft. Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, and the young hacker Edward (who's really a girl) each come from different backgrounds and have somewhat hidden pasts. They work together on the Bebop (not always an easy venture) in order to track down bounty heads in order to keep food on the table and the ship in repair.
In the movie, which takes place between episodes 22 and 23 of the series, things start off normally, or at least as normally as they can be when the Bebop crew is involved. Faye is on a routine job, trying to catch a small-time hacker. All she has to do is wait for the guy to get out of the tanker he's driving, and she can nab him. But when the driver turns out to be someone else, she is somewhat surprised. However, when the tanker blows up and the man mysteriously disappears from the scene, seemingly unharmed, things get complicated.
It turns out that there was some sort of biological agent in the tanker, and it is making a lot of people very sick. The government offers a reward of W300 million (the W stands for the currency used in the show), which immediately grabs the attention of the Bebop crew, as well as every other bounty hunter in the solar system (although, we never see other bounty hunters in action, which is strange, since they imply that everyone is now after the man). When Ed tries to hack into various mainframes to get information on the bounty head, the crew realizes that there may be more to this case than originally thought. The man, Vincent, is ex-army, and his old squadron has a bone to pick with him. Along the way, Spike meets a beautiful soldier named Electra who actually poses a challenge the nimble bounty hunter. While Spike, Faye, and Electra each try to zero in on Vincent, Jet and Ed continue to unravel the cover-up involving the military, a drug company, and Vincent.
Probably one of the best things about the movie is that, while fans of the show will love it, people who haven't seen the show won't have too much of a problem getting into the movie. The first scene expertly establishes the characters of Spike and Jet. It serves as an introduction for the uninitiated and a great scene for people already familiar with the characters. Furthermore, while there are a lot of references to the series (some of which are only sight gags, like the cartoon characters in the arcade), they are done in a fashion that allows newbies to get just enough information to know what's being discussed while not ruining the series. Another cool thing is that, since the movie was made after the series but takes place before the last few episodes, a lot of themes and events of upcoming episodes are forshadowed in the movie.
Cowboy Bebop has a good balance of intelligent story, character development, and intense action scenes (I really like the Spike vs. Electra fight, the monorail scene, and the final showdown). The themes of the series are still present in the movie, but this isn't just a rehash of an episode. It's too bad that the full English title, Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door, couldn't be used due to licensing issues, because that subtitle has a lot to do with the plot of the film.
This movie is a great follow-up to, what some believe, one of the greatest anime series ever (personally, I'm not much of an anime fan, but I love the series and the movie). It's great to see these wonderful characters again, and the adventure is worthy of the name Cowboy Bebop. See you, space cowboy...
