Movie Review: Novelty film for Star Wars's Mark Hamill fans Summary: 4 Stars
I watched this film yesterday (streaming from Netflix) and I'll have to say that it was a fun film to watch as our summer starts to come to an end. I was hesitant to watch this because it's probably going to be another campy dated seventies teen flick (like The Van, Aloha Bobby and Rose, Car Wash, etc.) but it was a bit more realistic drama than any kind of comedy that's hard to appreciate being over 30 years old.
But, I enjoyed this. Mark Hamill played Kenny, a typical white trash high school student in the Los Angeles area, who lives with his sleezy white trash mother in a trailer park, and who has poor grades at school, but, has a passion for working on and restoring cars. His first love in this film was to restore a Stingray Corvette.
No sooner does he and some fellow students completely restore this Stingray Corvette, during a friend's test drive of the Corvette, it is stolen almost immediately.
Kenny posts a picture of his Corvette at a gas station he works at, hoping someone will have seen it. He gets a clue from a passer-by that thinks he saw Kenny's Corvette in Las Vegas, so Kenny is determined to find his Corvette so he heads to Las Vegas. There he meets who is soon to be is second love, a call girl wannabe named Vanessa, played by Annie Potts.
Now, who in their right mind, could not love and appreciate Annie Potts? She's cute as hell, has an adorable Bronx accent, and has incredible patience for Kenny as they work together to help his find his stolen Corvette. Of course, Kenny's Corvette is there, but when he finally confronts the thieves, he learns that the conspiracy of the thief began at home with his auto body teacher (Ed McGrath) back at school in Los Angeles. So, Kenny is confronted by his teacher, and is offered a job with the car thieves who also restore cars (although they restore stolen cars). Kenny agrees but he has an alternate intention as he plays along till he and Vanessa make their move to get back his stolen Stingray Corvette.
Yes, this was a great film to end my summer. If this came out on Blu-Ray, I'd buy it.
Movie Review: Good movie but needs more on the cars. Summary: 4 Stars
I was in the middle emailing Anchor Bay Entertainment (after seeing the recently released DVD of Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry)thinking they might put Corvette Summer on DVD when I did a search on amazon.com and here it comes!
The story is beleivable and can relate as I love cars and worked on them similar to high schooler Kenny Dantly (Mark Hamill). He put his heart and soul into this beauty of a creation ( I beleive it was made by Korky's Customs Studio in CA). You see the slow methodical process of the build from the salvage yard to it's birth, but not overly in depth. I love how Dantly is sitting in the salvage yard and the Corvette emblem drops to the ground in front of him from the crane that's carrying it to the crusher. It's not really an all out car movie, there's more to it than that.
It's "his baby" (actually it belong to the high school) and goes to Las Vegas in search of it after it gets stolen when one of his classmates goes to get refreshments during its maiden voyage on the strip (Kenny said, "I didn't want no cokes! Who said I was thirsty?!" ). In the process, he meets up with a hooker (Annie Potts) and has a comical relationship with her as their quest to find the Corvette ends up with.... don't want to give it away. Go see the movie when it comes out on DVD!
Over all, a good movie but would've liked to see more detail of the Corvette and the bad guy's early 70's Trans AM (Had Trans Am shaker hood scoop but also Formula Firebird dual ram air scoops.) Maybe they'll have extras on the DVD on the car itself. That would be cools
Movie Review: Deeper Than You Might Think Summary: 4 Stars
I saw this at the drive-in when it came out. It's an easy movie to get totally lost in.
When I first saw it I completely empathized with Mark Hamill's character "Kenny" when his car / catharsis was stolen. The moment in the film when he first realizes he is looking at his stolen car at the car wash, the moment when the music inserts just enough of an orchestrated punctuation mark...that's magic. I am always very aware that I can't avoid a tremendous smile during that moment every time I watch this movie, just as I did when I first saw it.
I couldn't envision another actor in this film and have it work on the same level with the same impact as Mark Hamill. He always had a very likeable, sincere and positive energy throughout this film and wore his ideals with pride. A performance that leaves many of today's leading men looking like arrogant posers.
Many aspects of the 70's are encapsulated here as well, only sweetening a fantastic experience.
This is an underappreciated film with tremendous undertones: rise above your station, follow your values, never give up, fight for what you believe in and damn the torpedoes!
Movie Review: A Showcase of Mark Hamill and the Vegas of Yesteryear Summary: 4 Stars
An engaging period piece about a high school grad from a broken home (gypsy-like, yet caring mother and altogether absent father) in a desperate search to find the stolen Vette he helped restore in his high school shop class. Did California public schools have funding for that kind of project back in 1978? Probably not, but this movie is a superb showcase of Mark Hamill's physical acting ability and agility, natural comedic talent, and is a great historical recording of the Vegas of yesteryear. Also has a great plot twist and some bad guys who are really, really BAD guys. And I'd like to think that even back in the 70s it was not a common thing for high school graduates to pursue prostitution as a career choice (even if college wasn't an option), so suspend your disbelief and enjoy Annie Potts' comedic portrayal of a sometimes-unstable yet adorable protagonist and Hamill's eventual, true ally.
