Movie Reviews of Coogan's Bluff

Movie Review: Classy Entertainment
Summary: 4 Stars

This very good film is worth seeing for a number of reasons:
Firstly it is directed by Don Siegel who earlier in his career directed the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers and then went on to make a string of minor classics (Charley Varrick, The Shootist, The Beguiled) and later would direct the first Dirty Harry movie. Don Siegel was a major influence on Clint Eastwood as a director and if you've seen the above films you'll know why. If you haven't seen them they are all strongly recommended.

The second reason to see this is Clint Eastwood. As an actor he was just beginning to hit his golden period, and this film, where he plays Coogan, a deputy Sheriff who is sent to escort a dangerous prisoner, gives him the oppurtunity to show why he was the biggest box office star for years and years. A lot of credit must also go to Lee J Cobb who almost steals the film from Eastwood, playing Det McElroy the city cop with little time or patience for Coogan. However in the end it is Eastwood's performance that wins out, if only because he gets to deliver some laconic lines in classic style.

Some of the scenes from the nightclub (not to mention the music) look rather dated now (1968 was the height of flower power etc), but this is a well acted, action-packed and sometimes funny film that is well worth getting.

Movie Review: Police Procedural, but not Dirty Harry.
Summary: 4 Stars

My wife and I have been watching a series of Clint Eastwood movies as a source of late-night entertainment. I'd rate about 3/4 of them as 5 stars and the remainder as 4. Eastwood is hard to beat as a n actor/director/producer. About a week ago we watched Coogan's Bluff. It was an excellent movie, but I would not rank it amoung Eastwood's best.

In Coogan's Bluff, Eastwood plays an Arizona deputy sheriff who goes to New York City to pick up and return a bad guy to Arizona. Of course, nothing goes well. Then bad guy gets away and Eastwood has to help in tracking him down, and in his own way not the way of the NYCPD. It's a somewhat frustrating movie to watch. At every move, Eastwood is confronted with one rule, timetable or barrier of one sort or another. Well, you almost know what will happen. Eastwood starts freelancing around the rules and regulations in order to get the task accomplished in a reasonable amount of time. It's an interesting movie. It's police work, but don't confuse it with the Dirty Harry series.

Movie Review: Eastwood's Western Sheriff Arrests All of 1968 New York
Summary: 4 Stars

This film has aged extremely well -- a time capsule red state/blue state story of Eastwood's Arizona deputy sheriff -- "Texas" to the hard-bitten, seen-it-all New York cops, and his foray to New York City to pick up a fugitive. Eastwood's understated comic performance is spot-on, and New York of 1968 is a bizarre, mysterious melting pot, with hookers, freaks, crazies, druggies, and all manner of miscreants -- all portrayed with a wink and a nod in Don Siegal's steady hand. The scenes at New York's famous Electric Circus, and Eastwood's reaction, are priceless.

The Lalo Schifrin soundtrack is especially strong, and Lee J. Cobb's turn as the exasperated police chief adds to the fun. Good supporting roles too by Conrad Bain and Susan Clark. All in all this film is of a piece with New York films of its time, like Frank Sinatra's The Detective, Midnight Cowboy, even The Out-of-Towners. A treat.

Movie Review: Another cowboy on the loose in NYC
Summary: 4 Stars

Like a primordial creature slithering out of the ooze of some prehistoric lake, Clint Eastwood in this early outing finds himself slowly morphing from the independent cowboy spirit to the "rules, what rules?" modern urban cop. Playing the pre-Dirty Harry eccentric Arizona marshall Coogan, Eastwood is sent to NYC to bring back a prisoner (Don Stroud). Stroud escapes and Eastwood's honor is at stake. After much carousing and violence, he gets his prisoner back into custody again. The well-known Eastwood movie persona - the man going by his own rules in a world without order - is just being established here. Looking at it from the perspective of the 21st century, the depiction of hippies, LSD, and all the other late-60s sordidness seems awfully dated. There also aren't many surprises in the story.

Movie Review: Coogan's Bluff
Summary: 4 Stars

Unlike his 'Dirty Harry' movies, Clint Eastwood plays a more laid back cool Deputy Sheriff here displaying a toughness and resilience that draws respect from the New York police. Relentlessly hunting a convict on the run, Coogan never lets the objective of his visit from Arizona weaken as he comes up against some wierd and tough characters. He gets his man after a thrilling chase but the visit to the Big Apple does after all soften him a bit. A great watch with some excellent dialogue between the city slickers and this man from the outback.
