Movie Reviews of Constantine (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition)Movie Review: a calm, overthinked opinion Summary: 5 Stars
firstly, i saw this title three times, maybe that helps a bit to rate constantine as a film, not as adaptation or matrix-cover, bible-movie.
its a sarcastic occultism-crime-thriller with some horror elements. what i thought about that, only watching the movie itself without any other thing in this world.
-overall fresh ideas
-surprising interesting story, what seems lacking, but just need time and a bit logic thinking to let unfold itself and let you solve it in your mind. i for my part was not often surprised by other storys, except maybe wild things or something revalant to that.
-atmospheric dark world, which i liked very well, i was intrigued by it, because it looked real but on the other hand mystic and spooky.
-antihero character, who dont cares much about the saving of the world, a very depressive one with hidden under coldness has a pure heart, but not so shematic like other characters.
-bodylanguage of all characters. they were described, just not the conventional way. i liked it this way, not so overwritten/described as in other films. i find them very interesting and want to get know them more.
-visuals; detailed, atmospheric desing of places, objects, clothes, whole appereance, cool camera effects, stills and colors.
-computer effects, which were not so important, just for showing very plastic monsters, a very paintinglike hell and some cool effects.
-mostly realistic, lifelike, interesting dialogues, also not too describing.
-sarcasm: big plus of the film, i love that style. the humour was intended, and was very good.
-ending: very weird, unconventional ending, like saying "who cares, life goes on", and i liked that everything happened underground, without envolving the world.
-mostly ok music and sounds
-no lovestory, not much of the modern world, another world itself, no "big boss battle", or clear line between good and bad like in other films, very interesting portrayal of religion, gives some lines to think about these things, talk about them with others, but the morals were not so preaching or intellectual like in e.g. matrix, what was anyway much more cliched like this one.
-few but cool shockmoments, anyway cool exorcism, many memorable scenes because of the overall visual/filmmaking style, happening.
-memorable quotes, you will think long after the film about it.
-not to much action, not like other films i n this genre, made its own way.
things not so good:
-some music didnt fit into that film, a bit mainstream, adventurefilmlike, unprofessional
-some lines were a bit cliched
-didnt like the bugmonsters face, some important things were cutted out from the film
-keanus coughs were unrealistic, overdramatic
-a bit slowly forthcoming, but just after the third viewing :)
so for me, to sum up, a great experience, because it was good as an entertaining film but had things to think about too, some really unique visuals/filmstyle/characters, new. much more than it looks, an atmospheric, dark, moody world on its own, what should suck people who like this theme or love details/can atch a film without much action and without comparing/bashing it for no real reason in. so its definetly minimum a B.
Some things to other, often seen opinions:
-keanu was bad: yes, maybe he is a bit emotionless, but this feature was just fitting for a depressive detective who dont want to face his death because of cancer. i really liked him in this film, he was cool without being overblown and was like a normal human being with problems on everyday. very believable.
-film was stupid: i dont know why people say this, because the reeason that you didnt catch the logical describings, makes a film not senseless. i found for every question a logical answer, because it was made like this, a bit of an investigation on our own. also there are many themes in it mentioned, what can make people think and discuss about, i know many christians who did this, and i really wondered about that. and it delivered this things without seeming so intellectual like artfilms.
-rachel was the only who gave respect to the film: yes, maybe he is that character who we have emotions for, but that dont means she did more work than others. she did just what the others did: the best for fitting into the character. and the others were a bit more wicked than she as an average human, no?
-bad script/funny dialogue: i read the script, its really not much but that someone made this film of that, is just cool. dont forget it was lawrences first work, we shouldnt critisize him so harshly, i know its easy to close our eyes and bash something, but thats not really ok. the dialogue was sometimes intended for being funny, but i found it not bad, just interesting, like i would speak to the if i would be the discusser, i wanted to know everything about it.
-worst film ever: come on, than you really viewed just masterpieces like blow or green mile if you say that this is the worst film. the worst i would say about it is mid-class, because there are so many soulless, brainless, shematic, cliched films out there, you cant believe.
-like matrix/keanu playes neo again: matrix is completely another film, its story, its stlye, its meaning and so on. maybe some visual elements were sort of, but there were enough originals to forget that. and keanu played a self-confident savior, who was controlled by others in matrix, and in constantine a everything hating scumbag, who does what he sees as the best. nothing to do with each other.
-smoking campain: just sarcastic jokes, not for teaching. wasnt described as bad, just facts: if you smoke 30 cigarettes a day, the chance to grant cancer isnt low. also it described jc's feelings, because in the comics he didnt want to die
-dumb action/just cgi: action was ca. 5 minutes of the film, when the demons were killed. phew, thats really an actionfilm, isnt it? and about the cgi: i cant think of other things making monsters, hell and some effects: with models/rubbermonsters? believe me, that would be much worse. i dont think that action or cgi were the things the movie had as plus or main.
so thats all. i and many of my friends loved that film, i suggest anyone to see it, just with a fully open mind and just concentrating on the film itself. because its much more than you think. dont be too harsh and dont compare it to anything (bible, matrix, other films), not even with hellblazer: then its really not a fully true adaptation, but thats no reason to be bad as a film. sin city has in this point a plus- but isnt it good when a director makes his own fantasies nad words on something more than just copying someting? for me it does... but im still looking forward to sin city :)
Summary of Constantine (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition)Based on the DC Comics/Vertigo Hellblazer graphic novels and written by Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello, Constantine tells the story of John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), a man who has literally been to hell and back. When he teams up with skeptical policewoman Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) to solve the mysterious suicide of her twin sister, their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles. Caught in a catastrophic series of otherworldly events, the two become inextricably involved and seek to find their own peace at whatever cost.DVD Features: Additional Scenes:18 minutes of Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary by Francis Lawrence Alternate endings Audio Commentary Documentaries:THE PRODUCTION FROM HELL *Director's Confessional *Collision with Evil *Holy Relics IMAGINING THE UNDERWORLD *Hellscape *Visualizing Vermin *Warrior Wings *Unholy Abduction *Demon Face [Easter Egg] FORESIGHT: THE POWER OF PRE-VISUALIZATION with Optional Commentary by Francis Lawrence Documentary:Conjuring Constantine: from comic book to movie Featurette:Imagining the Underworld * Hellscape * Visualizing Vermin * Warrior Wings * Unholy Abduction * Demon Face [Easter Egg] Music Video:A Perfect Circle's "Passive" music video Theatrical Trailer
In the grand scheme of theological thrillers, Constantine aspires for the greatness of The Exorcist but ranks more closely with The Order. Based on the popular Hellblazer comic book series, and directed with nary a shred of intelligence by music video veteran Francis Lawrence, it's basically The Matrix with swarming demons instead of swarming machines. Keanu Reeves slightly modifies his Matrix persona as John Constantine, who roams the dark-spots of Los Angeles looking for good-evil, angel-devil half-breeds to ensure that "the balance" between God and Satan is properly maintained. An ancient artifact and the detective twin of a woman who committed evil-induced suicide (Rachel Weisz) factor into the plot, which is taken so seriously that you'll want to stand up and cheer when Tilda Swinton swoops down as the cross-dressing angel Gabriel and turns this silliness into the camp-fest it really is. The digital effects are way cool (dig those hellspawn with the tops of their heads lopped off!), so if you don't mind a juvenile lesson in pseudo-Catholic salvation, Constantine is just the movie for you! --Jeff Shannon
