Movie Reviews of Connie And Carla (Widescreen Edition)

Movie Review: DID YOU HEAR THAT MARY? 3 AND A HALF STARS
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a pretty good movie. It tells of Connie (NIa Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette) on the run from crooks who think they have stolen their drugs. They move into an apartment, where they meet the entertaining David Duchovny. Soon they can not afford the rent. The visit a drag/gay club and soon figure they can make a living from singing. This movie is very, very good but the acting could be improved and i think the plot which is simple was dragged on a bit.

Movie Review: A modern day Victor/Victoria that has more misses than hits
Summary: 2 Stars

I hate to be so cruel to a gay-genre movie (as I have most of them), but the truth must be told. This was a heavily watered-down Victor Victoria with a splash of Sister Act for the plot and a dash of dashed hopes for the ending. The acting was only fair, at best. Sure...there were those heart-felt moments, but they felt more produced than natural. Sure...there are a few laughs, but they were definetly constructed as laugh-points and lost their effect. As for overall comedic value, this film gets a 3/10.

Compare these to some of my favorites: To Wong Foo, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Victor/Victoria. You'll see where this film flops in production and quality.

Sorry Connie and Carla...but the show's over.

Movie Review: Life is like a patio door...
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie started out so funny and delightful, that I thought I was in for a real treat. Unfortunately, the end was rather lack luster as it bottomed out into a cheesy and slightly dissapointing after-school special on "being who you are". That being said, Nia Vardolos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and Toni Collette kept me laughing and almost succeeded in converting me into a musicals fan... almost. The plot is tired, your stereotypical "We witnessed a crime and now we better run!" scenario, but moments like a pack of cocaine exploding in the car, or the hitman's gradual infatuation with musical theatre perk it up. With a guest appearance by Debbie Reynolds, more queens than a pack of cards, and an awkward-but-sweet David Duchovny, these women pretending to be men pretending to be women will at least keep your attention as they parade across the screen.
Go ahead and rent it- and be fabulous!

"Life is like a patio door- you never know which side is going to open. Yeah, so you walk into the glass."

Movie Review: Connie and Carla is FAB-U-LOUS!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the funniest, most entertaining movie I've seen since
To Wong Foo.....! Hilariously funny (I was crying from laughing so hard, and I kept rewinding and viewing some scenes over a few times it was so funny) and the musical numbers were so fun to watch! The DVD containg deleted scenes that are just as funny, if not more, than any seen in the final cut. Also, funny outtakes. BUY THIS DVD NOW!!

Movie Review: An Opportunity for Collette and Vardolos to Sing and Dance
Summary: 3 Stars

CONNIE AND CARLA is a film you want to love: 'feel good queen' Nia Vardolos wrote, produced and 'acts' in what is touted to be another hilarious spin-off after her previously successful My Big Fat Greek Wedding. A number of really fine actors join in on this West Hollywood Drag Bar show - including the redoubtable Toni Collette (Muriel's Wedding, The Hours, Japanese Story, etc etc etc), Stephen Spinella (Angels in America, etc), David Duchovny, Alec Mapa (stage version of M Butterfly) and so on. The story is worn thin: two wannabe show girls witness a murder and flee into hiding in West Hollywood, finding their only chance at stage work in a Drag Bar where they must pose as drag queens never out of costume. Despite a few sidebars into sensitive relationship issues, the setup is just one for endless over the top stage numbers. Director Michael Lembeck (and writer Vardolos) simply can't lift this mediocre story to significant heights and hence its relative flop in the theaters. But enough of the bad news. The film is worth watching for the singing and dancing of Collette in particular, but also for Vardolos' performances in front of an audience. That part of the film is just plain snappy and if that is enough for you, then have at it. It is the excesses (like introducing Debbie Reynolds as a performer out to help the benefit premiere of the new 'Dinner Theatre') that drown what could have been a nice piece of fluff. Despite some sound performances by the cast the film never even approaches the level of Camp that could have made it memorable.
