Movie Reviews of Concert for George

Movie Review: Bone-Chilling and Tear Provoking
Summary: 5 Stars

"A Concert For George" is an absolute masterpiece of a tribute to a great artist and great man. It is difficult to find words to express the surpurlatives deserving of this DVD. I'm sure George Harrison was smiling over his friends as they performed his songs, and every time this DVD plays in someone's living room, George is smiling again.
The emotions dramatized by the artists participating in this utterly moving tribute to their beloved friend are electrifying and real. This DVD is hands-down my all time favorite. I had not been a great George Harrison fan until I watched this DVD and observed these musician/friends playing tribute to his brilliant body of work. I now recognize George's contribution to the Beatles and the music world in general. I couldn't help but wonder if the power duo of Lennon-McCartney had held him back, and what other amazing contributions he could have made to the Beatle's library had he been given the chance.
For example, I didn't know until watching this DVD that it was George who authored my favorite Beatles songs: "Here Comes the Sun, and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." When Eric Clapton sings "Beware of Darkness," only a cretin could watch this stirring performance and not be moved to tears. Billy Preston, singing his spine-tingling rendition of "Isn't It A Pity," is particularly poignant, as Billy, sadly, is no longer with us.
For a touching, spiritual experience, not to mention an opportunity to hear some of our finest musicians at their musical and spiritual height as they pay tribute to their beloved friend George, please check out this DVD. Read the details on Amazon regarding the many other exceptional artists participating in this project, (put together by George's great friend, Eric) and the fabulous Harrison songs they cover. You'll not regret it. RIP, George.

Movie Review: Focus on the music and you'll be fine...
Summary: 5 Stars

Many have already written glowing reviews of this DVD, and rightfully so - it is truly a captivating concert, captured beautifully on film. (It sounds incredible as well.) All the musicians and performers are in top form (save Tom Petty, whose voice seems unusually whiny even for him and who looks like the Scarecrow from "The Wizard of Oz" with bleached blond hair), and seem to genuinely be enjoying both the experience and the music of George Harrison. The two comments I would like to add are that it's nice to see Jeff Lynne featured so prominently, as it seems he gets little respect as a performer despite the great music he's made both with ELO and with others, and that I think it's sad that so many reviewers seem determined to assault Paul McCartney. Whatever Paul might have said to Eric Clapton that was edited out is inconsequential - he was probably just attempting to be humorous, and I would imagine wasn't meant to be insulting. (Even rock icons can get it wrong occasionally - that doesn't make them mean-spirited or vindictive, just human.) It just seems that so many people enjoy bashing McCartney, and, while his boundless energy and constant rah-rah kind of behavior can be grating at times, he truly seemed touched and honored to be part of the show. Certainly, his performances of "For You Blue", "All Things Must Pass", and "Something" are among the highlights of the concert - and, for those who want to call his late arrival onstage as "grandstanding", remember that Ringo had appeared only two songs earlier. In any case, the way they both participated was perfectly suited to the occasion - since I'd imagine George wouldn't have wanted his tribute to be primarily about the two surviving Beatles being onstage together again.

Just buy the bloody thing.

Movie Review: The Forgotten Love that was George Harrison
Summary: 5 Stars

The Concert for George is a concert from the soul by the performers who knew George best. From start to end you will be moved by the love for George that was exhibited by the performers who gave exactly what they held for George - love. Through his music, George's presence is felt. The songs are performed for the most part that way George recorded them - in this manner, the essence of the songs are not lost. You will be amazed at the remarkable resembalance of Dhani Harrison to his late father [Note to opauly: Dhani Harrison was born 1st August 1978 making his 25-1/2 not 16 years old]- who is just as talented as his late father. Dhani and Jeff Lynne (of ELO fame) have been responsible for most of the editing of material released since George's untimely passing (not this one though). Unfortunately, George is just being recognised as a megastar. Because he craved his privacy, most of his great work was quietly appreciated by his devoted fans. He concentrated on his work rather than the spotlight and because of this, most of it was picked up by devotees before the masses. As of late, his work has come full circle - recognised by the masses. Mirrortime stated to go buy all of George's albums - definitely, the Dark Horse years has just been released as a package. One should sit back listen to George's music and see what the 'quiet' Beatle actually contributed. John and George were the mega talents of the Beatles. Yes, Paul and Ringo are talented, but without Paul's egomania, he would have fallen by the roadside a long time ago. Think - whose old songs are still played - Beatles, John, George, and maybe, once in awhile, Ringo and Paul . By the way, I have been a George Harrison fan since 1964 and he has never disappointed me with his material. Check it all out by date order.

Movie Review: Dhani Harrison A Gift from Olivia and George
Summary: 5 Stars

Having been a Beatles fanatic since 1964, I felt that the Tribute Concert for George Harrison was perfect and as it should have been. To have a collective of such friends and musicians pay their final tribute to one of the truly greatest guitarists and songwriters was awe inspiring. Eric Clapton is number one in my book and his renditions of George's songs were absolutely stunning, soulful and full of love. Ringo's "Photographs" brought tears to my eyes as Ringo unfolded his emotions through the very words of the song. Macca did a great rendition of Something on the ukelele and continues to prove his masterful talent. George's Wilbury buddie, Jeff added another dimension to this already powerful group of super musicians. The percussionist who plays with Eric (sorry about the senior moment, can't remember his name just now) is always fresh and powerful. Tom Petty is forever Tom Petty and his playing and singing was especially wonderful. Last but certainly not least, is Dhani Harrison himself. This wonderful young man reminds us so much of his father at that age and it is a passage in time which will never be forgotten. His shear bravado and quite presence needed nothing more than his superb guitar. I know there are many others such as Billy Preston, Ravi Shankar and without them somehow the concert would not had been complete. I found myself smiling as the tears flowed down my face through the entire concert. A grand send off for one of our best beloved and talented musicians. A spirtual man who went to see "His Sweet Lord." Thank you to the beautiful Olivia, your presence graced the concert and couldn't have been as successful without you. Thank you for sharing your man with the rest of the world. God Bless you all.
Love and Light,
Chantal Tenace

Movie Review: What a Wonderful Tribute To a Wonderful Artist
Summary: 5 Stars

As soon I as have received my DVD, I started watching it. And I could hardly stop doing it... It is really a wonderful DVD from the package itself to its contents. Definitely a masterpiece to all George's fans throughtout the world. I have watched both DVDs 1 and 2 entirely and enjoyed so much.

There is NO weak point in the show - from the Indian music session to George's great songs beatifully performed by his long time pals like Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney and many many others. Tom Petty was astonishedly great, Billy Preston was playing with great joy and happiness (as always), Anoushka Shankar (Ravi Shankar's daughter) played wonderfully the sitar solo in the beautiful song "Your Eyes", and Joe Brown was divine in "I'll See You In My Dreams" - it was the final number and as he was singing, what seemed to be yellow and red petals were falling down from Albert Hall's roof throughtout the theater.

Monty Pytton has also a hilarious performance - even my kids have watched it over and over again...

Other highlights: Horse to the Water - as far as I know, the last song composed and recorded by George (with his son Dhani) for Jools Holland CD. It seems it was the first time this (beautiful) song was presented in a live performance. Unfortunetely this is the only song in the entire show which is not included in the Concert for George CD (God knows why!!).

After many many years another old friend showed up to play in a couple of songs: Klaus Voormann... But hardly noticed because he was positioned behind several other guitarists on the stage.

Certainly this one now is one of my favorite DVDs and one of my favorite shows as well. Worth every penny, cent or whatever money you are dealing with.
