Movie Reviews of Coming Home

Movie Review: Too much information for too few episodes
Summary: 3 Stars

Not even excellent performances by Peter O'Toole and Joanna Lumley can save this one. I never read the book, but I sure could tell they had to butcher the heck out of it to compress it down to two episodes. Why so short? Did the BBC cut off the funding? I mean, when you have The Pallisers and The Dutchess of Duke Street and Upstairs Downstairs all even today getting rave reviews for their 26 episodes, what in the world happened here? Certainly the material is there. It could easily have gone 26 episodes and joined the others in elite status. Instead, this one just crashes and burns. You are jumping from major storyline to another and there's no time to catch your breath. The stunning difference between the daughter in the first episode and the second...supposedly just two years...is not at all believable. One day she's a 12 year-old, the next she's in her twenties. Say what? What a "could have been" this show is. Don't call it a mini-series. It doesn't even qualify for that. The sad part is, it could have easily been a WWII version of "The Shooting Party" but falls flat. In that one, they had to cut costs and eliminated what happened in the Big War to the cast. But we get that here, the problem is, it is all so fast and what happens to them is so major, there is no time for adequate character development. Sorry, folks, I really tried. It's ok if you want a filler, but you will be disappointed at its great potential squandered.

Movie Review: Whatever happened to the story line?
Summary: 2 Stars

I thought the first DVD out of the set was pretty much to the plot of the book. But, whatever happened to Judith's old friend, Heather Warren, from Porthkerris?

On the second DVD from the set I was totally disappointed with how the story went. Why did they keep Edward alive? Why did they portray Walter as a nice guy? And why didn't they ship the Somervilles' out to southwest Asia and so goes for Judith? Also, it was Judith who found Gus in London. Why oh why was it Diana Carey-Lewis? Did the broadcasting company run short on budget? Were they in a terrible rush to finish the series like a botched-up plastic surgery horribly gone wrong?

Overall I sort of enjoyed it, but it could have been a lot better!!!!!!

Movie Review: Fun at times, but mostly a disappointment
Summary: 2 Stars

I was disappointed with the adaptation of Rosamunde's Pilcher's epic novel. The filmmakers simply did not have enough time to develop any of the characters. It is all "tell" and no "show." You are told that Judith wins the Cairn Cup, but are never shown her doing anything that would indicate why she deserves it. You never see the friendship between Loveday and Judith or develop. There are some good performances, such as the actor playing Tommy Mortimer and Peter O'Toole (greatly underused) and I liked what they did with the character of Jess, but overall, it is a disappointment.

Movie Review: "Coming Home" Movie Does NOT Live Up to Book
Summary: 1 Stars

"Coming Home" is my favorite novel of all time. I return to it again and again, like a friend. I have read most of Rosamunde Pilcher's books and I enjoy them all to varying degrees, but "Coming Home" truly stands out above the rest. This is why I was so eager to purchase the DVD - not as a replacement, but as another way to enjoy the tale. I am bitterly disappointed. I have only made it through Volume I (of two volumes in the DVD set) and I hate it so much that it's actually painful to watch. The plot is butchered, critical characters are omitted, and I have yet to encounter a single appealing character as portrayed by the actors. In fact, I actively disklike every single one of them -- to the extent that it's possible to dislike characters so shallowly developed. I do not anticipate that my feelings will change if I can ever bring myself to play the second volume. My advice is this - if you enjoy the book, don't ruin it by subjecting yourself to this appalling rendition.

Movie Review: Charmless and shallow
Summary: 1 Stars

Having enjoyed the book (several times) despite its lack of reality and adherence to a pastoral myth of perfection in everything (come on, how likely is it that all bad things become good and every important person is totally charming and/or perfect looking, while all the horrid ones get their just desserts), I was interested in seeing the screen adaption. Yuck. Charmless, poor and wooden acting, changed story lines and themes all contributed to a total let-down. To me, it seemed to be just a cynical means of extracting more money out of a popular novel (a bit like the merchandising that goes on around all sorts of movies)and to hell with the atmosphere.
