Movie Reviews of ComedianMovie Review: A look at the life of a working comedian Summary: 4 Stars
A documentary about the hard work and angst that goes on behind the scenes of a stand-up comedy act, focusing on the super-famous Jerry Seinfeld, who is struggling to develop an all-new act, and newcomer Orny Adams, who is just trying to make a name for himself in the business. The insecurity and fear never seem to go away. There are many fascinating aspects of this film: the camaraderie between stand-ups, the importance of coming up with an hour of solid, audience-tested material, the compulsive need of comics to perform in front of a live audience for fear of losing their edge.I was fortunate to catch Seinfeld's act a few months after watching the movie, and I enjoyed comparing the two. The act was smooth and polished and betrayed none of the insecurity I had seen earlier in the film, which featured the genesis of some of the bits that I saw on stage.
Movie Review: Master of his domain. Summary: 4 Stars
JERRY SEINFELD is a funny guy. This documentary about the rigors of creating a reputable, humerous, and lengthy stand-up act is both interesting and fun. COMEDIAN goes behind the scenes as SEINFELD builds his comic mojo in the small comedy clubs of New York that he started his career in. A nice package that has a mood of closeness to the comedian and his line of work and is a great way to pass time if you like the shows SEINFELD or CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, or enjoy the man's act. The only speed bumps in the film are scenes with young comedian ORNY ADAMS who has to be the most annoying and self-absorbed "comic" working today. He simply whines way too much. Would have been excellent with out him and more JERRY, but still manages to entertain with an insight into what it takes to be funny or choke trying.
Movie Review: What does being obnoxious have to do with being funny? Summary: 4 Stars
This documentary does give an insight into the minds of a group who stand or fall almost wholly based on what they alone create. Those who buy it expecting a stand-up routine should learn to read, however my point is...
Many other reviews slaughter the 'other' comedian, Orny Adams, re how narcissistic, arrogant etc he is and how this would clearly hamper his career. I mean, look at 'good egg' Jerry, he succeeded. Personally, I found Adams unfunny, but think about it... narcissistic, deeply angry, contemptuous of both his audience and peers, insecure? Emm, Larry David anyone? If it wasn't for that kind of flawed/human character, Seinfeld would never have become the success that he became.
Movie Review: Great Insight Into The Life of a Comedian Summary: 4 Stars
This is an engrossing film that highlights the life of an up-and-coming comic, against mega-comic Jerry Seinfeld's return to stand-up. It features many interesting behind the scenes situations with Jerry's famous comic friends. Well shot and crafted. As an interesting comparison, watch Jerry and friends early appearances on The Tonight Show when they were first starting out - The Best of The Tonight Show - Stand-Up Comedians (2 Discs)
Movie Review: Not that there's anything wrong with that... Summary: 4 Stars
I really enjoyed this DVD although it's a significantly different genre than the Seinfeld TV series. It does give a keyhole look at how comedians "work up" their material and the sub-culture that comedians inhabit. Because it's Jerry Seinfeld that we are predominantly following, Comedian commands attention that it might not otherwise attract. Orny Adams gives us a window into the pysche of an aspiring comedian - he seems to want public applause and interest a little too much. In all, a satisfying watch.
