Movie Reviews of Come and See

Movie Review: Great, Graphic, Disturbing, and Not Seen Much
Summary: 5 Stars

Well, Oleg Klimov's film Come and See was quite the eye opener for anyone wondering about WWII on the Russian Front. You see what the Russians endured day to day, fight back, but sadly many more killed in a manner that doesn't happen to stockyard animals. The Nazis are beasts, their commanders heartless and cold, and the collaborators cowards wanting to survive.

I came across this film, while looking for films about the Soviet Front, besides Cross of Iron (which I like, but focuses on the Germans more than the Russians), Stalingrad-1993 (Germans), and the Why We Fight Series Battle For Russia- WWII propaganda, but very effective. In that WWII Why Film, they allude to rape and mass murder, showing grainy black and white images of swinging bodies and poor brutalized pre-teen girls who were raped. Come and See goes beyond that.

Come and See is brutal, graphic, but also part of a little heard of chapter of history. And with the 60th Anniversary of the End of WWII, this should come up along with any films on the Soviet Vengeance on East Prussia, and their execution of Nazi and Ukranian/Russian Nazi soldiers.....

Each war has many sides to it, and Come and See shows one tragic side.

It's recommended for history buffs, photography/film students, lovers of foreign cinema, and anyone looking for a film beyond the usual box office crapfest.....

I recommend it, BUT THIS IS NOT FOR KIDS AT ALL.

Movie Review: Unpleasantly necessary
Summary: 5 Stars

Unlike most warfilms/drama this takes the perspective of a young boy, barely in his teens and follows his plunge in to the abyss of war. Director Elem Klimov barely escped Stalingrad as a young child, which may attribute to the increasingly hard tone in the progression of the movie.

This movie couldn't have been made in the Western world. Klimov would have been thrown in jail for child abuse long before the end of the production. The result of this "boot camp" acting is chilling, the transformation of Florya the main caracter from a naive boy to a seasoned war veteran within the end of the year is gutwrenching. Klimov even admitted that they used live ammunitions in one of the scenes where lead actor Alex Kravchenko is under fire. He would not spare his actor in order to get what he wanted from him.

The haunting tales of nazi atrocities in the East are strong focal points in this movie. However, if you are one of those people who likes to watch movies over again, you will find many different aspects. To me, this is a movie not just about WWII, but about all children caught in the blazing fires of war and their agony. Though there are few battle scenes, this movie is not for the faint-hearted. Beyond the immediate references, this movie will make you think about things not too comfortable to contemplate. It stays with you, and you might never forget it.

Movie Review: What A War Is Really About
Summary: 5 Stars

I viewed this film last night due largely to the high ratings of other commentors. The first half of this film is rather surreal;with a lot of symbolism that can be common in East European films. A lot of this symbolism can be rather diffucult to interpret and many people may be tempted to stop watching the film. This would prove a large mistake as the second half of this film is a stunning, intense portrait of the true horror of war. Outside of actual war footage, I have never seen a war film that recreates this horror as realistic as the second half of Come and See.

It is important, however, to remember that even though the Germans inflicted unthinkable acts upon the Russian people, the Russians also acted much the same toward German civillians and captured German soldiers. Do not forget that Russia began the Second World War as Germany's ally and aided Germany in the invasion of Poland and then invaded Finland. After the war ended Russia continued to inflict human rights violations upon the East European countries they "liberated" from the Germans.

In summation, I don't believe I will ever see a film that serves as such a stark reminder of the inhumanity that accompanies any war. Ironically, it was made by a country that has caused it's share of inhumanity.

Movie Review: You will think about this movie for days
Summary: 5 Stars

Ok, I have never written a review for a movie but I am a military history buff that enjoys reading about the lesser known war topics. I stumbled across this movie a few weeks ago on Amazon and read some reviews that were critical of the production quality on DVD but I must say that this version by Kino has outstanding production quality and it's on 1 DVD so I assume that this is a new DVD production. The movie was extremely griping and thoughtful and basically follows the life of a young Russian teen boy through some very difficult trials behind German lines in Russia. You follow his life through joining the partisans but the movie is primarily an individual self-discovery of the horrors of war for this teen boy since he quickly becomes separated from the partisan group. If you want a movie like "A Bridge to Far", do not buy this one; however, if you want a slice of life, emotionally intense, movie then this one is for you. Being an American, I think if you could imagine that Kansas had been overrun by the Nazi-like terror and you were a young teen boy living through it, this movie could be your life adventures. Finally, after reading the reviews I was afraid that this movie would be a blood and gore movie but in my opinion there is little blood and gore but it is very emotionally intense.

Movie Review: The most realistic war movie ever seen!
Summary: 5 Stars

In my life I have experienced, first hand, the brutalities of war and have also seen many motion pictures that dipict what war might have been like. The advantage of seeing films that are produced and made outside of Hollywood gives a person like myself the ideas and concepts of what other countries feel about making war movies. You realize that to every war there is at least another story and another point of view. It is left up to the one that holds witness to such accounts to fathom what is real, unreal, and what is wrong and right. In all the war movies that I have ever seen, this one is the most realistic, most unbelievable, and most haunting I have ever experienced. This movie allows the viewer to feel the pain that is captured on the lense. Many scenes are shot with no dialouge but the viewer knows exactly what is going on and what every actor feels. The pain, the torment, the suffering that is filmed is also felt by the viewer. The first time I viewed this movie, there was one scene I had to fast-forward because it was too agonizing to watch in its entirety. Make no mistake, this film will be one of the most memerable war movies that you will ever see. You will want to see over and over again until you can no longer take the suffering of war and all that comes from it.
