Movie Reviews of Combat America

Movie Review: Short and succinct depiction of the US air war in WW2 Europe
Summary: 4 Stars

After the death of his wife, Carol Lombard, in an aviation accident, Clark Gable - well past draft age - joined the US Army. He ending up in the Army Air Force as an officer and a gunner. While not actually engaged in this occupation, he did, in point of fact, serve his country in an honorable manner. After all, it's unlily that any 40 year old would have been assigned to an overseas combat assignment. Instead, he was charged with making a film about the US Eighth Air Force.

More a documentary than a training film, Combat America depicted the deployment of the the 351st Bombardment Group to England and some of its missions. Gable narrates and appears in the film, but manages to Not make himself the center of attention in any manner. He is the viewer's guide through the story. While the style and dialogue are a bit stitled and contrived, it is nonetheless as honest and straightforward a depiction of what a wartime combat unit was like as would be allowed by the times and the military censors.
