Movie Reviews of Columbo - The Complete Fourth Season

Movie Review: Just another notch in an already full belt
Summary: 5 Stars

Sadly, there are only 6 episodes for this "season" however, Columbo is one of the few television shows that makes the absolute most out of the absolute least. And with this season we get another new package design in so far as the disc set up, and I have to say I'm very glad they ditched the dual sided discs for season four. Unfortunately, the cover and disc art (again) are random press shots from various years.

An Exercise in Fatality: 97 min.
Robert Conrad is perfect. In fact this is the perfect season opener. It has a defiant perp, some humorous bits, and intrigue. I simply cannot believe how good the casting is for this show. It is so consistant and always above par it really dims the lights of my other favorites of this era. If you stick around for the closing credits you can hear the Milo Janus "jingle" which was a nice touch by the producers. 5 stars
Milo Janus: Your health program didn't last very long, did it?
Columbo: Long enough.
Milo Janus: You know something, Columbo, you're a devious man.
Columbo: That's what they tell me.

Negative Reaction: 97 min.
Who knew Dick Van Dyke could act? Not I. Having never seen "Diagnosis Murder", I doubt I have seen Dick outside of comedy (mind out of gutter, please:). The plot gets a bit "out there" and relies a lot on chance but luckily the performances are there to real it in. The bit with Larry Storch as the driving instructor further instructs an indusrty on how to do television. 4 stars
Galesco: Look at the negative in the back of the camera, Lieutenant. It proves I'm right.
Columbo: Were you a witness to what he just did?
Sgt: Yes, Lieutenant.
Columbo: Were you a witness to what he just did?
1st Policeman: Yes, sir.

By Dawn's Early Light: 97 min.
Wow. Just wow!! The Coronel, "Patrick McGoohan", is SUPERB and is my third favorite perp yet! While Robert Culp is my first, and Jack Cassidy is my second, I feel confident McGoohan can sit in chair number 3. Not only was his performance totally believeable I feel somehow, somewhere these actors have been cheated out of an award... just after I wrote this I found out McGoohan had won an award, good eye, huh? No award for Culp? :( The plot is easy to follow, and each and every performance is a hit. 5 stars
Rumford: (to Columbo) We both have similar jobs. I wear a uniform. You wear...well, I suppose you could call that a uniform.

Trouble Waters: 97 min.
Ah, the obligatory 70's "cruise ship" episode. Heck, Starsky and Hutch did it:) And while this is one of my lesser fave of this season it is no less memorable. Having never seen many/any of Season Four before on my public television station, I was leary of this one. Often when you take a star out of his/her element it breeds disaster, but this is Columbo so he feeds off of it. The way the creators crafted the portions with his "wife" are just another notch in an already full belt. Dean Stockwell, though not at all a defiant perp, (my preference) still has that "look" that is so vital to this series. 4 stars

LOVED IT!! I have seen this one a few times on local TV. I see some here think it is average but the lead here is superb (Oskar Werner). I can look past the technology of the day which reveals an intriguing mystery. I never fail to be amazed at the writing of this show and all the little details. Like Columbo noticing the "mulch" situation. And the set for the house was a true gem. It's a shame the disc art could not feature the memorable locales. Just great television through and through. 4 stars
Columbo: Good afternoon, Mr. Van Wyck.
Van Wyck: Oh, what is it? A new experiment?
Columbo: I'm sorry to bother you again so soon.
Van Wyck: Perhaps it would be more convenient for you, Lieutenant, if you'd just move in one of our guest rooms.

----
A Deadly State of Mind: 74 min.
I don't particularly care for George Hamilton. Not sure why. This episode is ok but I doubt I'll have this one in heavy rotation. George just doesn't have that sort of seething desperation I seek in a good perp. On the plus side all the bit parts are handled well and Falk as always shines brightly. A Deadly State of Mind seems more like a by-the-book episode than anything outstanding. My least fave in Season 4, much like the last ep. in S1 is my least favorite. 3.5 stars
Dr. Collier: Do you know, Lieutenant, you're a marvelously deceptive man. You know, how you get to the point without really ever getting to the point.
