Movie Reviews of ColorsMovie Review: You Heard The One About The Two Bulls? Summary: 3 Stars
Dennis Hopper directed this gritty gang drama set in the late 80's. Haskell Wexler, the director of 'Medium Cool', was his cinematographer. Since scenes depicting gang life are handled so sensitively the film could almost pass for a documentary. Before things can get too serious Hopper throws in a good mix of sex and violence. Pop Hodges (Robert Duvall) is pissed off when he gets paired with young hot shot Danny McGavin (Sean Penn). Pop served five years on the streets during the Bloods and Crips war and currently enjoys an administrative position. This explains why he doesn't feel the need to chase down perps like Danny does. McGavin is a loose cannon who roughs up his suspects whereas Pop takes the time to get to know them and lets them off with a warning. This makes him friends on the street but it makes him an enemy to Danny. The two butt heads when it's discovered that a prime suspect (Don Cheadle) in the murder of a Blood by a Crip is a man Hodges let off with a warning. The film is definitely gritty and the police work is well portrayed. The film's authenticity sets it apart. Things get confusing since there are so many cops, gang members, informants, reformed gang bangers and so forth that you're never certain who's on what side of the law. The beautiful and sexy Maria Conchita Alonso co stars as Danny's new girlfriend who enters into their relationship knowing that her life is at risk. Set to an awesome soundtrack that alternates between Herbie Hancock, Willie Nelson, and Ice-T,'Colors' works because of the strong acting of Duvall and Penn. It isn't as effective as Hopper's other films as director but like all his previous work the ending is devastating.
Movie Review: review of colors Summary: 3 Stars
better than average cops and robbers movie. was given quite of bit of importance that i don't think was deserved, when it was released. well acted movie, with top stars, including Sean Penn (not one of my favorites).i don't know if the writing was the downfall of the movie, or if the film was not put together very well in the cutting room as i suspect. while you watch the movie, you may notice how it seems to jump around a bit (never seemed to have a clear story line), and certain characters are not fleshed out. the best character in the movie is the older police officer played by robert duvall. as much as i hate to admit it, sean penn does justice to the young, gung ho, and vain officer who Duvall's character tries to teach. very good soundtrack, and the opening credits (with Duvall and Penn driving through downtown LA in and unmarked police car) is great. not a great movie, but a good movie that could have been better with some work. a good watch if you like police dramas.
Movie Review: From the side streets to the smokin grounds of LA's Gangsta' Summary: 3 Stars
I remember first seeing this movie on one of my favourite t.v. channels and was glued to the tube until the ending which I thought was justified. It's about a hot shot cop ( Sean Penn ) partnered up with a soon-to-be retiree (Robert Duvall). The film shows the two generation splits of the same career held in the same town and how it can have great advantages and disafvantages. They chase thugs around and the hot shot cop falls in love with one of the Chicano's ladies. Anyways this movie displays the fast pace of action and dialogue any underrated movie can offer with two talented actors.
Movie Review: P-p-p-Penn makes his case (horizontally) Summary: 3 Stars
Seeing this with the lads, we'd always get the giggles during Sean Penn's inexplicably interminable love scene. C-c-c-can't stop laughing at his ego. He won't stop bonking 'till all bonks ends. C-c-colors, colors, he's seeing colours. Sterling work from Messrs Penn and Duvall is thankfully not entirely undermined by some exploitative chase scenes.
