Movie Reviews of Colors

Movie Review: Colors review
Summary: 4 Stars

I liked this movie when i first saw it and i seen it about 10 times... i like to watch any movie that involves gangs (especially bloods & crips) so i can learn from them...

If you're looking or are just a collector like me of gang movies... you may not want this one in your collection... becuase to me, it doesn't show enough Bloods & Crips in it.... the characters are fictional....there are some minor gangs in it as well called The White Fences (Latino/Hispanic gang - i've never heard of this gang, so i don't know if they are true or not.).

The actors who play the gang members of the White Fences are good actors though... i think they are better then Don Cheadle and Wayans who play Crip members... this movie centers more on White Fence and their rivalry w/ Crips... there's not too much focus on Bloods in here... it also more focuses on Sean Penn's character and Robert Duvall too (good cop/bad cop), and Penn on how he falls in love w/ a former gangmember woman in the White Fence gang.

Colors is a good watch...i just wish it had more gang focus in it...and more gang sets (chapters, i.e. Eight Tray Gangsters, Hoover, etc...) If you're looking for a good gang buy, buy the book "Monster" by Sanyika Shakur a.k.a. Monster Kody Scott, or "Do Or Die" by Leon Bing. Those 2 books far surpasses this movie...

Movie Review: A good film exploring gangs
Summary: 4 Stars

I liked COLORS alot because it's a gritty, but realistic police drama. I grew up in bad urban streets, so I know how bad things can get. I also like the film because it explored the dangerous lives the Crypts and Bloods, who wear blue and red, naturally. There is still a bloody gang war between them, but COLORS wisely tells us they're bad background and potray them as human beings like us, and not vicious animals arrested by the police we see on TV.

Anyway, Dennis Hopper awkardly, but fantastically directed this film with Robert Duvall as a veteran cop and his young, headstrong apprentice Sean Penn, as they lead a Los Angeles gang unit against the petty crime in the streets fueled by the two rival gangs. But the boiled relationship with Duvall's calm manner and Penn's hair-trigger temper won't get them very far to survive in Watt's mean streets. That problem leads to a sad climax.

COLORS is a bit dated now when compared to more brutal, but nearly worthless gang movies nowadays. But it helped paved the way more better ones like BOYZ N THE HOOD and MENACE II SOCIETY. The film is different from both of those movies because it gives us a picturesque view of both the urban gang life and the police life.

Movie Review: THE TURF IS REAL IN "COLORS".
Summary: 4 Stars

Dennis Hopper presented an unseen vision of Americana with EASY RIDER in 1969. It unsettled the masses. He did the same almost 20 years later with COLORS, a frightfully realistic look at urban gang warfare in Los Angeles. Hopper has always been a talent, both in front and behind the camera. COLORS could only be handled by the likes of an independent spirit like Hopper: It's tough, brutal, no watered down studio gloss, no techno effects. Hopper is an actors director and Robert Duvall and Sean Penn are a perfect fit. The oft told cop story of the veteran and the novice gets an injection of new life: the partners don't like each other, they tolerate each other for the sake of survival. Duvall and Penn give strong expected performances and the story rifles along free of expected cliches. Ice-T, in his rapper days (pre LAW & ORDER: SVU) is featured on the soundtrack.

Movie Review: GOOD ACTIONER ABOUT INNER CITY GANGS
Summary: 4 Stars

A VETERAN POLICE OFFICER [ROBERT DUVALL] IS FORCED TO WORK WITH A YOUNG KNOW IT ALL COP [SEAN PENN] IN L.A.'S CRASH UNIT. HOWEVER, THEY ARE CAUGHT UP IN A DEADLY GANG WAR. AS TIME PASSES, THEY BEGIN TO RELIZE THAT THE ONLY WAY THEY WILL STAY ALIVE IS IF THEY COME TOGETHER. VERY GOOD MOVIE THAT DEPICTS WHAT IS HAPPENING TOO MUCH AMONG GHETTO AFRICAN AMERICAN YOUTH. VERY GOOD PERFORMANCES BY THE LEADING STARS. ONLY THING THIS MOVIE COULD'VE WENT WITHOUT IS THE ROMANTIC SUBPLOT BETWEEN SEAN PENN AND MARIA CONCHITA ALONSO. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, A FANTASTIC ACTION MOVIE ABOUT STREET GANGS.

Movie Review: A Must See
Summary: 4 Stars

Robert Duval and Sean Penn both give outstanding performances in this movie. the movie, on the other hand, is good but not great. Penn plays a rookie cop, with a temper, learning the beat. Duval is the veteran, with a cool head, respected by the cops as well as the gangs. duval quickly learns that he must teach penn the ways to keep him alive. a definate watchable movie
