Movie Reviews of Collective Soul: HomeMovie Review: The reason concerts are performed Summary: 5 Stars
Why would a musician practice their instrument for countless hours year after year? Watch the concert DVD and you will say, "Oh, that's why."
Why would a classical music symphony orchestra perform a concert with a rock and roll band? Watch the concert DVD and you will say, "Oh, that's why."
If like me, your invitation to this concert was lost in the mail, fear not. This concert DVD is as close as we could ever get to being there. Turn the lights down and the stereo up. By the end of the concert your dog will be wondering why tears are streaming down your face as you are waving your Bic lighter in the air. Just be careful not to set the curtains on fire.
If you are a huge Collective Soul fan, well I'm preaching to the choir. If you think you might know one of their songs but you're not sure because your obnoxious radio DJ never tells you who you're listening to, this would be the perfect introduction to a great band. This is a "filler-free" concert. Time and again you will be saying, "Oh, I didn't know they did that song!"
Lastly, I was so glad this concert was recorded after the release of Collective Soul's "Youth" CD. In my opinion "Youth" is the best material they've ever done. Which is nice I think. Much better than a band resting on the laurels of their early years. They perform a number of their "Youth" songs in this concert, and they sound fantastic, especially with the orchestra. After a dozen years together, why would Collective Soul go to the trouble of putting together a concert DVD like this? Watch the concert DVD and you will say, "Oh, that's why."
Movie Review: Everyone loved this as a gift ! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered the DVD when it was released. Amazing concert, beautifully shot, great sound and the teenaged orchestra is very talented. The blending of the band and the orchestra is no surprise as Ed Roland has always used orchestration (still waiting for him to knock out a movie soundtrack) and Collective Soul is always up for a fundraiser or a worthy cause. The band (especially Will Turpin - too funny backstage with the kids, and Ed Roland teasing the Timpani kid and getting the kids to let loose and jump up) really connected with the orchestra and everyone was having a massive good time. I have been to more concerts that I can remember (literally) and 'Better Now" was the best/funnest encore I've ever seen. Seeing Ed pour himself into "Crown" and the band knock "Shine" out of the park was worth buying the DVD. COLLECTIVE SOUL has ALWAYS been worth more than the price of admission. I decided to order copies and include them with some of my Christmas gifts. Older brother (40) said it was the best concert video he had ever seen. He remembers seeing them in CA with Creed and said he's excited to go see them when they come back to the West Coast. Twin nephews (16) loved it and now have C.S. all over their IPODS. My daughter showed it to her college roomates and...more fans are born. My newlywed assistant and her husband (20 somethings) said they loved it and watched it 2 times right away. Two of my clients have flown out to see them perform, I think in some Jazz club in the south. It's just too bad I'm not an agent getting a percentage :)
Movie Review: A worthwhile concert. Take a look. Summary: 5 Stars
I stumbled onto this DirecTV "Freeview" performance. I don't have anything by Collective Soul. I'm not too familiar with their music. I know from radio play they've had a few or so hits. I've had no reason to find interest in them. They seemed like a typical metal rock band. Territory treked by others.
All those preconceptions changed (vanished) when I saw this pairing of orchestra and rock band. I've seen it before with other band attempts. Sometimes it pleasantly works.
But this one scores MAGIC on my "satisfactory" scale. Don't be misled by the "Youth Symphony" label, this orchestra fuses so well with CS's Rock I can't imagine its participation separate from the band's music. Both the band and orchestra blend without either attempting to out do the other. It's impressively scored. The quieter songs especially show the symphony's effectiveness. But the gist of Rock Music is not compromised. CS's play is solid rock. This symphony is not window dressing. It's a full band member and helps raise the concert beyond simply memorable. It aims to captivate the soul of Rock within whoever catches this performance. Probably not what CS intended. But that's how it affected me. In my humble opinion, a grand and preeminent accomplishment. My congratulations to Collective Soul.
Movie Review: Simply first class!! Summary: 5 Stars
Collective Soul in my opinion are one of the most underrated bands around today. Their songs are so well written and the variety of their sound is just amazing. I have been a fan ever since I first heard Shine back in 1994 and since then they have had my attention full-time. I have many favourites, whether it be ballads like the forementioned Shine, Run, Needs etc, or rock anthems like Heavy, Gel and Why Pt.2. Collective Soul: Home brings to reality what I have wondered for a long time.. What some of their songs would sound like accompanied by an orchestra, and after watching this DVD for the first time, I can say that it is just beautiful!! It brings a whole new level of enjoyment and respect to such songs as Youth, Pretty Donna, Compliment (well pretty much all of the songs!). I have seen them live twice here in Auckland new Zealand and I would love to see them again!! I am glad I ordered this DVD, it was well worth it and I can say I will be watching over and over again. If you love Collective Soul, get this DVD!!
Movie Review: Amazing concert even for Collective Soul 'newbies' Summary: 5 Stars
I am completely new to Collective Soul. I had been trying various 'Music in High Places' and their singing in Morocco stood out. I risked the concert and found it just incredibly good. It was high energy, well shot, great sound, great lighting and backed by an excellent youth orchestra (as good as an adult orchestra). These guys are just nice to hang out with in this format and I like that in a concert. Many bands sound good but visually arent friendly or entertaining. These guys are, their lead singer is charasmatic and they connect with the audience really well. The guitar work is brilliant too. The only minor criticism is that the vocals could get a bit drowned out by the wall of sound but with the overall great music and sound it is a minor quibble.
Now if you are a casual grazer like I am this rock band are worth the risk. I might add I'm an 'old timer' (at 55 I've been following rock a long time) and these guys stand the test of wide appeal. So not just for their fans or the younger lot.
