Movie Reviews of Collective Soul: Home

Movie Review: Home - from Atlanta GA to YOUR Home
Summary: 5 Stars

I was in the front row of this concert. This DVD captures the sound quality literally AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN GET without actually being there. The TV runs don't do this justice - you HAVE to get the DVD to experience the whole thing appropriately! Direct TV and VH1 have each run partials of the concert. VH1 cut out half of it, to their discredit -- and of course the half they cut out was, in my opinion, the best orchestral arrangments of the whole show.

My picks for the show? My personal favorite was CROWN. If you are familiar with Collective Soul's CD arrangement, this is so far above and beyond better - and I loved the CD cut. You can't imagine how moving this tribute to Ed's father is, with orchestra. In my opinion, Ed's best vocal of the concert. It's the most poignant moment of the show - the next, being YOUTH, with just Ed (vocal and guitar) and a cello.

TIED with first, is the orchestral arrangement of PRETTY DONNA. (I cried during this at the show - although I hate to admit that ;) Simply breathtaking.

Second pick for orchestral arrangement was NEEDS. This is my all-time 2nd favorite Collective Soul song and favorite video (check it out on LaunchCast!). I don't feel this was Ed's best vocal performance, but the arrangement was beyond excellent and everything I expected it would be (and I had HIGH expectations, mind you).

Third pick was THE WORLD I KNOW. SUPERB arrangement and superbly done by all involved.

Of course, you gotta love SHINE. There's just no two ways about it.

This concert takes you through most of the "big hits" you'll recognize as Collective Soul (even if you don't know who did the songs originally or can't remember) and you'll hear them like you never have before -- and you'll hear new songs from their CD, Youth (I also reviewed this - check out my review).

These kids in the Atlanta Symphony Youth ORchestra were amazing.

OH that's another thing - you've GOT to watch the "BEHIND THE SCENES". In my opinion that's the best part. Will (bass player) is EXCELLENT and you can tell all the guys are really having a great time and it's a great moment in their history. They are excellent with the kids and the kids are really excited. Every one of these kids is a master of their instrument.

Granted you will find some arrangements that orchestra doesn't really mesh with -- HEAVY (in my opinion, but it was cool to see how they pulled it off) being one -- but even on that one, the stage show was enough to keep you on your toes.

ALL IN ALL, I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH. It's a pity they did not have this out BEFORE Christmas. BUY THE companion CD also.

I am a professional musician and this is hands down the BEST concert I have had the pleasure of experiencing. I have seen rock concerts, I have seen symphonies - now I have seen both at once, and this is the best thing I have seen in YEARS. I would GLADLY pay the money I did to go again, ANY DAY.

Movie Review: Exciting marriage of rock and classical music
Summary: 5 Stars

Despite being a dedicated collective soul fan since the days of shine, I was a bit skeptical about collective soul deciding to do a concert with an orchestra. This type of thing had been done before (Metallica, Scorpions, Evanescence, etc.), but what set this performance apart from the rest was the seamless integration of the orchestra into all of collective soul's songs, as though it belonged there the whole time.

This should really come as no surprise, given that string accompaniments are found frequently in collective soul's discography. "The World I Know", "Compliment", "Needs", "She Said", and "Run" are all examples of songs that just crave to be accompanied by an orchestra. Not to mention, "Pretty Donna" which is an orchestral piece in itself.

From the beginning of the show, the band put out a lot of positive energy, and you could easily tell how much they enjoyed themselves. The same could be said about the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. The conductor even seemed to be getting into the rock music a lot, which was funny to watch at times.

The special features on the dvd include a short behind-the-scenes making-of the "Better Now" music video, and a lot of Bassist Will Turpin talking to the Youth in the symphony. There is even a backstage performance with lead man Ed Roland of an unreleased song, played on nothing but an acoustic guitar.

The sound and picture is incredible. With the 5.1 surround sound it's very easy to feel like you part of the audience. The editing and camera angles were very good too.

For completeness, here is the setlist. Almost all of their greatest hits are covered, and quite a few songs from their 2004 studio release Youth are here too. Even the song "Youth" appears, which was previously only released on an EP in 2005:

01. Counting The Days
02. Listen
03. December
04. Compliment
05. Precious Declaration
06. Needs
07. Heavy
08. Run
09. The World I Know
10. Pretty Donna
11. Youth
12. Crown
13. Under Heaven's Skies
14. She Said
15. Home
16. Gel
17. How Do You Love
18. Better Now
19. Satellite
20. Shine

This is the best concert DVD I've ever experienced.

Movie Review: Out-frickin'-standing!
Summary: 5 Stars

Seeing and hearing such a timeless rock band as Collective Soul perform their hits with 120+ incredibly talented teenage musicians from the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra will blow you away! I've had this DVD for 3 days now and just can't get enough of it. I had to order a second DVD because my girlfriend wanted to borrow mine permanently after our first viewing!

Simply put, if you like any of CS's music, you should buy this DVD without the slightest hesitation. You know the songs are excellent already, but so are the sound, the arrangement of the symphony, the camera angles and editing, and the physical performance itself. It's obvious the band is having a great time, and even the younger musicians get their groove on during "Better Now", getting as wild and raucous as the fans in the front row!

There are only a few things I wish were improved on the DVD, but they're not enough to warrant reducing the rating to 4-stars:

o No Blu-Ray... I'd have thought a 2005 performance would have warranted using high-def cameras!

o The case itself is a PAIN to open! It has some stupid latch that I basically had to break the second time I tried to open it. Why waste money re-designing and manufacturing a CASE?! The traditional case is just fine without getting "child-proofed"!

o The behind-the-scenes extra was very fun to watch--great to see how the practice came together and the band and kids (loved meeting the kids!) put in such hard work and pulled off this spectacular show, but the clip starts on the 1st day of practice. How did we get there?! Who came up with the idea? Who did the symphony arrangements? How did the kids react when they got the news they'd be performing with CS? The clip is great, but it starts almost at the very end of the story it should be telling.

Regardless of the nit-picks, this DVD is stellar. If you don't buy it after reading these reviews, then you must have no Soul! ;-)

Movie Review: a lot of fun !
Summary: 5 Stars

It is interesting that there is only one review lower than 5 stars for this DVD. I must admit my reaction on first seeing it was a definite 5 stars, and still is.

Visuals and sound are excellent; editing is interesting and these days, more importantly, "not annoying!"; the orchestra adds a richness and an element of fun to the whole proceedings to the point of bringing a tear to your eye; song selection is great; Ed Rolands singing is top class, and the band seem tight and on form ... how could it NOT be 5 stars?

Well, in defence of a lower than 5 star rating, I do tend to agree that an orchestral backing DOES smooth and fill out the performance to the point where the group itself either cannot play, or the listener cannot hear all the nuances of their own performance. It is not simply an issue with this recording, but most concerts with an orchestral backing. "Score" by dream Theater is another recent example.

I don't know if you have "polyfilla" in the USA .... to fill in cracks in walls around the house ? anyway, you know the sort of thing I mean. ..... to me, an orchestra is musical "polyfilla", and the question is, do you like a very full, nice and smooth, very polished performance, or one a little rougher around the edges, the way (perhaps) rock music should be ?

This DVD is most definitely the former, an the best example of this is in "Heavy"... my favourite CS track ... the orchestra took the sharp edge off this track and towards the end, the orchestral embellishments were, IMO, more of an (out of time?) distraction than anything else.

Apart from that little gripe, I am still very happy with this DVD, but I CAN see how others might want to see the band stretching out a little more. Living in the UK and not getting to see them at all UNTIL this DVD release, I would definitely like to add to this excellent DVD with the option to see them in the "raw".

Movie Review: Outstanding performance! Almost ideal concert DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

It is just impossible to make an ideal concert DVD. It is always "editing to fast", or "lack of DTS 5.1 Surround mix", or "video a bit grainy", or "video too dark", etc. There is always something. Although, I might admit, there are a couple concerts which are very very close to IDEAL. Take Eagles - Live in Melbourne as an example of "almost ideal" concert. It is very hard to produce such DVD, especially with some bad editors which think that MTV method of producing the video clips could also be applied to Live Performances. They could also add some cheap tricks as visual effects like you are watching a very old VHS tape, for instance. Well, for some music DVDs (like Placebo's Paris concert) it works, but mostly is just very very annoying. "Home" DVD is pure concert with no black/white shots, without track name listed on a screen (for God sake, you already know from DVD's back insert what song is next!), without any gimmicks, and without dancing on a stage VIP seat persons. So, it is my impression, that currently reviewing DVD "Home" by Collective Soul is very close to ideal DVD as well as Eagles Australia concert. But (always "but", but there is nothing we all can do about it), in this particular show, it is a track list which made this outstanding performance "almost". Maybe it is subjective, but they could add for instance "Maybe" song, or something like that. Plus, I'd prefer a DTS 5.1 Surround. Maybe you guys could agree with me on this one - DTS 5.1 Surround is much better than Dolby 5.1. Anyway, this concert is almost perfect, guys are having a blast. Atlanta Youth Orchestra is very tallented and in perfect harmony with Collective Soul music, which is, in turn, doesn't sound "away from the orchestra". Five stars concert and not even a quarter of a star less. I do really enjoy this show, so will everyone who'd pop it in and watch it. I wish we had a more concerts like this one. As I said it is almost ideal.
