Movie Reviews of Cold PreyMovie Review: cold, relentless, Nordic killing machine . . . Summary: 5 Stars
Directed by Roar Ithaug, Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt)(2006), contains elements common to many slasher films, but unlike most in the genre, they fit together cohesively to produce a chilling horror thriller, that is still extremely effective, although the spoken language is Norwegian.
The movie enjoys a unique setting, high on the snow covered slopes of a mountain, where a group of five college age friends are off on a snowboarding trip. When one of them has an accident, it causes the group to seek refuge in an abandoned lodge. The film successfully establishes a feeling of isolation, which draws the audience into the situation. Color is used to help establish a mood, as the film has a desaturated look, usually with a light greenish tone.
The story is uncomplicated, without a lot of distractions, and it becomes easy to identify with the characters, and almost feel that you are in the lodge with them. While from another culture, the young people seem very real, normal, and likeable. The injured man, Morten Tobias (Rolf Kristian Larsen), is an introspective type. Mikal (Endre Martin Midtstigen) and Ingunn (Viktoria Winge) are a young love struck couple, while Jannicke (Ingrid Bolso Berdal) and Eirik (Tomas Alf Larsen) are a couple that have been together for a while, and are trying to sort out where their relationship is going. Cut off from the outside world, but safe from the cold, the group is just settling in for the night, when a figure appears, and sinks his snow axe into soft human flesh.
As the group explores the small lodge, the discover evidence that they are not alone, and soon encounter the killer, who is masked, dressed in a parka, and ready to use his axe. Things take a little while to get going, serving to build up a little tension, but once the killer gets busy, matters proceed rapidly. The action is non-stop, and the level suspense is sustained up until a chilling conclusion at the edge of a fissure in the ice. That fact that Jannicke, is intelligent and takes decisive action, is one of the main reasons that the film flows so smoothly, and feels so real. There is little wasted time, as even though terrified, the survivors do not panic or get hysterical. Ingrid Bolso Berdal does a fabulous job, and Rolf Kristian Larsen, is also very good. There are a few questionable story elements, but there are no major flaws, or wasted moments, in this well composed and executed horror chiller.
The DVD contains some interesting bonus material related to the production of the film, including covering how the film was processed to adjust the color. Director Roar Ithaug and his crew were isolated on location, when shooting parts of the film, where they could focus on what they were doing 24 hours a day, if necessary.
Cold Prey launched the Norwegian slasher genre, and was followed by Cold Prey II (2008) which continues where the first film left off, featuring Jannicke and the snowman killer. Cold Prey III is scheduled for release in the fall of 2010, and is reportedly a prequel, focusing on the early life of the mysterious killer.
