Movie Reviews of CocktailMovie Review: Simple Plot. but surprisingly good Summary: 3 Stars
... I thought I was in for a turkey, but found myself watching a pretty decent flick. Yeah it's poorly made and the camer crews shadows can be seen in a few frames, but it is still a pretty good movie. Tom Cruise plays an ambitious young man who arrives in New York City and becomes known as a flashy bartender in a hot club. After falling for Elisabeth Shue's girl-next-door character, however, his desire for success causes him to travel down a more selfish path with an older woman. The film, directed by Roger Donaldson, is built on entirely on appearances and flash. The more interesting and underlying themes, however, particularly the hero's obvious Oedipal dilemmas, are lost beneath this window dressing, as if everyone involved was afraid to commit to the story's intrinsic value. All in all, unless you're a die hard Tom fan, there isn't much here for you, but if you just don't have anything better to do I suppose it's okay to watch, you know on those days where there is nothing on t.v. and it's raining outside.
Movie Review: MST3K Fans Rejoice -- Rifftrax is Here! Summary: 3 Stars
A drunken Australian councils a young Tom Cruise on life, love, and female undergarments. Tom and Nicole's wedding night? No, this is the thrilling plot of Cocktail, starring Cruise, Bryan Brown, Kelly Road House Lynch and Gina Showgirls Gershon. When young Brian Flanagan (Cruise) is discharged from the Army and quickly discovers that he has few job prospects, scant talent, and no discernible intelligence, he exercises his only real option and gets a job at a TGI Fridays, whipping around bottles of Blue Curacao and serving deep-fried broccoli balls to people wearing suspenders.
When Coughlin betrays his partner, Brian flees to Jamaica, puts on a cheap, Qiana jungle print shirt and resumes his half-baked act there, soon bedding down the improbably named Jordan Mooney (Shue). Coughlin follows him to Jamaica. Can they rekindle their friendship? Will they reform their circus/bartender act? Will they get a job together tossing chicken strips around at a Carl's Jr.?
Movie Review: Enjoyable for What it Is + Great "Oldies" Soundtrack Summary: 3 Stars
Tom Cruise was good in this and he and Bryan Brown had great chemistry. Their bartending scenes are fun until the plot weighs it all down a bit.
The story of an attractive, ambitious young man chasing wealth and women (preferably one and the same) has been done a million times. So has the story, in various ways, of showing that those goals are not all they're cracked up to be. It's a nice love story, with good performances and an engaging sound track. No Academy Awards, but a good movie to enjoy of an evening. (Nice to see pros like Elizabeth Shue and Lawrence Luckenbill in the mix, too).
Best part, imo, though...the soundtrack of "oldies but goodies", including Little Richard on rock n'rolling "Tutti Fruitti", the Fab T-Bird's "Powerful Stuff rock/blues, Bobby McFerrin with "Don't Worry, Be Happy" John Cougar Mellancamp's ocver of Buddy Holly's "Rave On", the Beach Boys with "Kokomo",
"When Will I Be Loved", and more. Good fun.
Movie Review: Not totally satisfied Summary: 3 Stars
not sure what the problem is, or if its even the fault of the actual dvd, but the picture quality is pretty awful. its grainy, and dark. i get a better picture when im' watching something on regular tv, on a station that is NOT HD. other than that, it was delivered quickly which was nice, just the quality has bummed me out a bit...
Movie Review: With Friends like this... Summary: 2 Stars
Cruise plays Brian Flanagan, I guess because people think he does a decent Irish accent. Nevertheless while under the drink mixing tutelage of "Obi-wan" Coughlin (Brown) he gets involved with Coral (Gina Gershon) later telling Coughlin of their bedroom exploits. To ensure that Flanagan sees the light, Coughlin sleeps with Coral to try to show Flanagan she was no good for him. Why Coral would sleep with Coughlin just because Flanagan said they were making nikki-nikki is a mystery (she's seen sleeping over at the apartment and all cuddily with Tom's character for God's sake). Anyway, what a pal, nice to see Coughlin really cares. Later, actually just a brief dissolve to ocean shores & islands, despite this friendship-ending dastardly deed Flanagan befriend's Coughlin while working in Jamaica. Now that (Brown) has found "true" happiness (Lynch), you'd think he'd want the same for (Tom), right? Wrong. Despite Flanagan's seriously developing affinity for Jordan (Shue), he dares (Tom) to bed the mature, rich and connected Bonnie (Lisa Banes). Of course, this destroys Cruise & Shue's chance for romance, despite his explanation that it's okay because "when a guy lays down a dare, you just got to." What kind of logic is that? Still later trying to make up with her, he claims he got spooked by Jordan, so which one is it? Finally, how nice for Hollywood to wrap everything up with death, attempted seduction, pregnancy, attempted bribery, and Flanagan striking out on his own in one of the riskiest businesses around a "Theme" bar. Although, cute at times, one has to wonder the next time someone dares Tom's character.
