Movie Reviews of CocktailMovie Review: "Tom At His Heigth Of Superstardom" Summary: 5 Stars
Before Tom Cruise was known as a crazed, jumping individual (anyone remember his appearance on "Oprah"?) and after his breakthrough performance in 1986's "Top Gun" Tom appeared in a line of successful Hollywood films making him the biggest box office attraction of his generation. "Cocktail" is one of the films that solidified Cruise as the most popular male star of the late eighties and early nineties.
I hadn't watched "Cocktail" in over ten years, but recently purchased the film on DVD. I completely forgot how dated the movie is; everything from the big, curly female hairdos to the tacky eighties music score and songs epitomozes how much the film was of its era. Still, if you can get past those minor issues the film is quite good. Tom gives a convincing performance as a young man who comes to New York City with dreams of becoming successful in the business world. After failing miserably in college (while bartending) Brian Flannigan (Cruise's character) decides to go to Jamaica with his best friend, make some quick cash, and open his own bar in the Big Apple. There's a nice love story here and Tom has never looked better, especially in the Jamaican scenes with his amazing tan.
The film grossed an amazing $80,000,000 on a $6,000,000 budget and is now known for some of the songs used in the film, tracks performed by the Beach Boys and Bobby McFarrin.
In recent years Touchstone Pictures has released "Cocktail" in a two DVD set with Tom's "The Color of Money" film from 1986, a picture he starred in with Paul Newman.
Movie Review: Best Tom Cruise movie Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not a huge fan of Tom Cruise, but I think this is probably his best movie in my opinion. This is the right role for his cocky attitude. This is a great 1980s movie too. It has a lot of the themes from that time period. Of course the movie is probably most famous for the bottle-spinning slick bartending and banter between Cruise and Bryan Brown. It's almost like two great movies rolled into one. One movie is the whole get-rich decadent 1980s scene and the other is a halfway decent romantic movie. All of the acting is great, and most of the dialog is sharp. This is a movie you can watch over and over and it never gets old.
Movie Review: FUNNIEST MOVIE EVER! Summary: 5 Stars
The seasoned bartender, Doug Coglin, has to be the funniest character of any 80's movie made. (Even though he doesn't intend to be) If he's so experienced and knows all the ropes, why's he behind the bar at a TGIFriday's?! And his constant 'know-it-all,' English, mentor tone dialogue is classic. "Beer is for breakfast around here. Either drink or be gone..." So quotable. The other funny part of this movie is the fact they're 4 deep at the bar and it takes these guys 10 mintues to make one drink! Who would go back to that bar?! Classic 80's 'style before substance' film.
Movie Review: Sign yourself up for the "Cruise" of a lifetime! Summary: 5 Stars
Another Saturday evening with a nasty case of gas and a big bag of nobody next to me on the love seat. A night like any other, until...
This all-you-can-eat eye buffet set up camp in my living room. Roll over Elisabeth Shue,
Bahama Mama has licked her plate clean and she's back for seconds. Oh, and, uh, yoohoo, bartender, I'll have a marriage on the rocks. No, on second thought, why don't you hold the ice tonight, and serve me up a stiff one instead! Yeeeeeow!
Movie Review: One of his best!! Summary: 5 Stars
Granted, it's cheesy, but when you look beyond the simple story and thrown in plot twists, it's awesome!! To pick up your life, live and work in the sun and then fall in love with a beautiful woman you meet on an island - sounds like evry guy's dream, right? At least mine. I'll live vicariously through Tom, since it wouldn't work for me. This has always been an under-rated movie, but any red-blooded guy should be able to identify. Great acting thrown in for free!
