Movie Reviews of Clerks (Collector's Series)

Movie Review: One Of The Funniest Movies Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

Yes it's true; Clerks is black and white, has no real movie stars--just casted with old high-school and college buddies, and was made on only a $27,000 budget. Most people would think that with that kind of start--a good movie would be impossible to make. Not for Kevin Smith...

Clerks follows a day in the lives of two overworked counter jockies who hate their jobs more than anything. The convenient store worker, Dante, is on his day off and is planning on sleeping in and playing hockey in the afternoon. Early in the morning, the boss calls him and tells him that the other guy is sick and cant come in. Dante agrees to work as long as the boss shows up at noon to take over. From there the day only gets worse for Dante and his best friend and video store worker, Randal. During the course of the day they manage to [upset] almost every costumer, learn things about their sex lives, play hockey on the roof, and even attend a wake (which the scene ends in one of the funniest ways).

This movie made Kevin Smith a huge star. All it took was the hilarious Clerks to start him off and by the next year, he had already made another movie with stars like Jason Lee and Ben Affleck. And from there made movies with even more stars like Joey-Lauren Adams, Matt Damon, Shannon Elizabeth, and still keeps his old "Clerks" buddies like Brian O'Halleran and Jeff Anderson, and of course Jason Mewes.

Clerks is definatly one of the funniest movies ever and IS the funniest Kevin Smith movie out of the New Jersey series. Watch out for "Jay and Silent Bob's" first movie appearance which was followed by roles in Kevin Smith's other movies and even their own movie. This is Kevin Smith at his best.

"Clerks" runs for about 95 minutes. It is rated R for extremely explicit sexual dialogue and for strong language. It originally was rated NC-17. Not reccomended for anyone under 17.

Movie Review: "Buncha Savages In This Town".
Summary: 5 Stars

This is STILL the best Kevin Smith project to date, and easily one of the best presentations of the "underclass as totally hip" plot that was also used with great success in the film adaptation of Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" (also a 5-star recommendation, in case you're curious).
>
There isn't much of a plot to give away, really...young man with dead-end job juggles romantic crises, wiseassed friends, and ball hockey commitments around a (slightly les than typical) day behind the counter at his place of employment, a convenience store in New Jersey. If you are easily offended, you probably won't make it through the first 15-20 minutes of this movie... it's one of my favorite flicks of all time, but it definitely has its off-color moments.
>
The DVD presentation itself I'm less than satisfied with, though...the commentary is obviously dated (I lost track of how many "we're in the process of making 'Mallrats'" references there were...and that let-down of a follow-up was three movies ago) and could have been re-done for the sake of this "Collector's Edition" DVD release. At the time I bought this DVD, it was priced far more extravagantly than it is now, but I credit Kevin Smith for creating a movie that's so fantastic that it was able to set and maintain its own mark. If you have a DVD player and a VHS player, you may no longer find youself contemplating the VHS version simply for the sake of saving a few dollars. All the same, the DVD transfer isn't really that much better (unless you just can't live without the 1.85:1 ratio and dig the extra features) than what I remember the VHS presentation to be...but I definitely recommend this movie to be purchased and watched as often as possible, regardless of the format chosen...it really is that good.

Movie Review: Clerkin'good
Summary: 5 Stars

After seeing all of Kevin Smith's other movies, Clerks was the last one I saw. And I admit, I thought that it would be pretty outdated and probably not AS funny as his other movies (especially the humor from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, his latest and last of his Jersey Trilogy) mainly on the purpose that it's black and white, and seems old and all...but I was wrong. Clerks stands out as one of the funniest comedies available still today, and Kevin Smith's humor hasn't changed a bit, just evolved. Clerks is best compared with "Office Space" by Mike Judge (the guy who created Beavis and Butt-Head) for it's accuracy for portraying working employees. We follow Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran, who's also in many of Kevin Smith's other movies) and his day at the convience store as a clerk working on his day off. And there's Randal Graves, his next door working buddy who constantly shows up next to Dante behind the couter and they both pursue the meaning of life and more. And of course right around the corner we have Jay and Silent Bob, a couple of known drug dealers who constantly show up here and there in this flick, but more limited than in other Kevin Smith movies (for those who love the two heroic icons).
Clerks is a simple, insanely low-budget comedy that focuses on something that we all look for in a movie: smart dialogue. The way that Kevin Smith writes the dialogue in between his characters are pure original and genious, and Clerks is no exception.
So if you are looking for a graphically enhanced and special-effects filled flick, turn away from Clerks as far as you can, but if you like a good movie with excellent dialogue (although filled with extreme profanity and humor), Clerks is an ideal choice. It's a slacker and funny comedy.

Movie Review: A must see for every "Indie" fan
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember the first time I saw this indie "epic" - having read one quick review in a zine, and then checking it out in a theater on vacation. It's very rare that any movie these days can truly give you great storylines, interesting characters, yet keep you amused & interested the entire time. An ingeniously written script, great delivery by Kevin Smith and the supporting cast, and devoid of Hollywood sentimentality. Kevin Smith is the king of clever dialogue, subtle and not so subtle low brow humor and Stars Wars references. Yes, it's rude and low budget but that's what I like about it. Okay, it was shot on some sort of grainy Black and White film, so the picture quality doesn't really benefit from the digital clarity. The sound is surprisingly good for the production cost and I actually caught a joke that I had missed in previous viewings. I'll spit on your grandma's sausage wallet you dog fellater. However, the whole reason (besides it's being a great film) to buy this DVD is the extras. If you are a fan of the extras on DVD's this has pretty much all that you always hope will be on a disc: deleted scenes, a music video from the soundtrack, directors commentary, and an alternate ending! The commentary (which I am listening to as I type this) was recorded during production of his second feature "Mallrats" (which the critics panned but I loved) and really gives you a feel of Smith's personality and what it would be like to watch the film with him and his friends. Check this one out. This is in my top 5 movies EVER and is a "must have" for the hard-core fan.

Movie Review: IT'S 5 Stars

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! CLERKS is a battle cry for anybody like my-
self who has ever held a customer service job! The writing is
brilliant, the characters are unforgettable and very funny, the
music is great; it's just one heck of a movie!!! I avoided watch-
ing CLERKS at first just because it was so hyped up and praised
by the critics and moviegoers alike, but I soon learned the err-
ors of my ways and really got into the movie after viewing it
with one of my former housemates! There are so many funny scenes
in this! I love that part where that Russian guy sings the song
BERSERKER and the scene where that Chewley's rep gets all the
customers riled up about smoking, the hockey scene on the roof-
top is funny, but my FAVORITE scene has to be when RANDALL tells
off that customer in the video scene! The dialogue is perfect and
I like how JAY puts an exclamation point at the end of it! There
are many funny characters, but I would have to say that my favor-
ite is SNOWBALL. He just kind of wanders around in the movie,
showing up at various times and the deleted scene with him is
hilarious. I really enjoyed the DVD version of this, with all the
deleted scenes and the running commentary. It was also interest-
ing to see the original final scene. I'ts easy to see why they
didn't put it in the film. I also like how during one argument
that DANTE is having with VERONICA that the camera shows a shot
of the cat reacting! This is a classic film and one of the funn-
iest films ever made!
