Movie Review: The Whole Enchilada

If you look for recordings of Beethoven symphonies, you will easily find #3, #5, #6, #7, and especially #9. My impression for many years was that the other four weren't worth listening to. This DVD box set with Claudio Abbado, the leading conductor of our day, dispels that notion. Under his baton, they are all beautiful. He is as graceful as a cat on the podium and Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome is such a stunning location that this 1080HD DVD set is mandatory.
The Seventh Symphony has long been my favorite, but I would like to watch it a few more times along with the others to see if I need to change my mind (the Eighth sounded pretty good last night).

In February 2001 the Berlin Philharmonic and Claudio Abbado were guests at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome with all of Beethoven's symphonies. Their success was overwhelming: ther were standing ovations after each performance and the critics spoke of seminal moments in the history of music.
