Movie Reviews of City of Ghosts

Movie Review: A journey to hell!
Summary: 4 Stars

This film is a real journey to an unknown world. An assurance-executive is inquired by the federal authorities due the fact the Assurance Enterprise has not responded to their clients after a tragedy.

There's a shadow of doubt about fraud and so he by his own, will undertake a journey to contact Marvin (his employer but tied to him for other reason) that eventually will lead him to Bangkok( Thailand) and then Phnom Penh (Cambodia). Once he arrives a set of unfortunate will happen him until he finds the awful truth behind. A sinister web of corruption that involves a retired General will take place.
Matt Dillon made an auspicious directrial debut with this tense drama, hovered of tension and crude realism. The cast was formidable. Depardieu is terrific like the owner of a nasty hotel (The Beiville) and James Caan as Marvin conform a team hard to improve.

Don't miss it.

Movie Review: MATT DILLON, OPUS 1
Summary: 4 Stars

**** 2002. Written with Barry Lost Highway Gifford and directed by Matt Dillon. Jimmy flies to Cambodia in order to find Marvin, the man with whom he uses to swindle people for years now. There, Marvin is about to build a casino with an ex-general while Russian ex-partners are searching for him. I liked a lot Matt Dillon's first and only film to date, the director giving the impression that he really loves his characters. The description of life in Cambodia is also well observed and almost palpable, thanks to a great Gérard Depardieu as Emile the bartender. The dream scenes are for once smart and reminded me the way Alfred Hitchcock handled them decades ago. All in all, I highly recommend this movie.

Movie Review: West meets east.
Summary: 4 Stars

I would actually give this film 4.5 stars out of 5. I just returned from Bali where I found a copy of this film on DVD. The jacket suggested that it was filmed for the most part in Bangkok and since I lived there for three years I felt it was worth a viewing if only for some scenes of a city I love. Well, Bangkok gets only a brief glance as Dillon's character goes to Phnom Penh in Cambodia, a city I visited in 1996. "City of Ghosts" is an interesting and very plausible story well-acted by the cast, and fleshed out very convincingly with local characters. The cinematography together with the atmospheric soundtrack create the experience of being there. Truly a wonderful experience of a film. West meets east. And Dengue Fever! I'm waiting for the CD to arrive now.

Movie Review: Ive lived it
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been to Phnom Penh many times. The street scenes are very real. The bar in the film is by the railroad station.Other than the tourist area along the river, the whole city is a mess.I have just returned to America from Cambodia,my expat friends there all laughed at many things in the film.(There are no monkeys or snakes in the city)(There are no raves at the temples)(or girls behind glass)I enjoyed the film because its so hard to get any visual info on Cambodia.---See the film and stay home, anymore tourist will ruin it for us that love it,

Movie Review: This is a good fil
Summary: 4 Stars

I met Matt Dillion in a small French bar at 3 am in Siem Ream back in '98. I guess he was considering doing this film and getting a feel for the country.

The movie give a pretty good idea of what Cambodia is like back in the late 90's.

If you want action this isn't the movie for you but I enjoyed it enough to watch it several times and to also go and buy a copy.
