Movie Reviews of City SlickersMovie Review: Charming Summary: 4 Stars
Nothing like two weeks herding cattle on a dude ranch in New Mexico and Colorado to clear up a pesky case of middle age angst. Actually I wouldn't know, but watching the timeless comedy CITY SLICKERS gives me a pretty good idea. When three New Yorker buds (Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, and Bruno Kirby), all with midlife crises of their own (although Crystal's seems forced and contrived), venture west to do something they know nothing about (ranching), the fun truly begins. From learning to ride horses, to birthing calves (and that scene is quite the eye-opener), to being intimidated by a crusty, cantankerous old ranch hand (Jack Palance is a treasure), this comedy will charm the buttons off of you.
The dialogue is seamless and funny, and often heartwarming, while Stern by far gets the best line, as he confronts his soon-to-be ex-wife: "If hate were people, I'd be China!" Palance steals every scene he's in, I'm at a total loss why Helen Slater is in the cast (she adds nothing), and Crystal's burned-out-radio-adman shtick comes across as whiny and petulant. (Yet here's a film that has him manning up admirably.) CITY SLICKERS is a warm, rousing comedy that still feels good. And that, pardner, is pretty durn charming.

Movie Review: Remember: just one thing Summary: 4 Stars
Three friends (Billy Crystal, Bruno Kirby, Daniel Stern)attempt to ward off old age by participating in a cattle drive. The trail boss, wonderfully played by Jack Palance, dies of a heart attack and his assistants turn out to be a pair of drunken bullies who abandon the vacationers to their fates. Rather than leave the cattle to die in the desert, the trio decides to bring the them in, and their holiday turns in a genuine ordeal. This movie is a lot of fun. The screenwriters (Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) do a good job of setting up a situation in which each man has his sense of self-worth on the line. The characters are familiar types with recognizable mid-life problems, which makes them easy to identify with. The comedy is nicely interwoven with deft character touches. Palance's advice to Crystal is deceptively simple. Billy Crystal's second best performance (after "When Harry Met Sally").
Movie Review: You Know, I Never Moseyed Before? Summary: 4 Stars
You can't not like this movie. Billy Crystal plays such an adorable character, a complacent man turning 40 who gets talked into a crazy birthday adventure with his two best friends. Jack Palance does what he does best; he plays the intimidating roughneck whose hard edges are at times comical.
This movie is a good gift for anyone who enjoys a good comedy. The characters seem very genuine, and the plot makes you long for a trip out west.
Movie Review: Chemistry, chemistry, chemistry Summary: 4 Stars
I'm not going to review this movie overall. All I will say is that Jack Pallance and Billy Crystal together were brilliant. I have rarely seen such chemistry in a comedy. That said, the other brilliant gesture of this film was Curly's advice, that the meaning of life is "one thing." True. I never thought Hollywood could come up with something so real.
Movie Review: Lough Out Loud Funny Summary: 4 Stars
Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, and Bruno Kirby take a trip to the old west to unwind. Here they meet some great characters including Curly, which is played by Jack Palance. Jack Palance won a best supporting Actor for his role in this movie and steals every scene he is in. This movie is very fun to watch, a must see!
