Movie Reviews of City SlickersMovie Review: Hijinks on the Happy Trails Summary: 5 Stars
Clearly Palance's best work since Gunsmoke. Favorite scene is where Curly gets drunk and suffers a fatal heart attack while attempting to ride a cow.

What can I say. I real classic, even enjoyed by my young children. Extremely entertaining.
Movie Review: Middle-aged Antics Summary: 4 Stars
This film was produced at about the same time the "men's movement" was just getting started. Robert Bly had recently published his book, IRON JOHN, and men all over the country were starting to grapple with the meaning of masculinity and trying to find their place in the grand scheme of things.
The story chronicles the lives of three middle-aged men trying to make sense out of their frustrating, seemingly mundane lives. In an effort to find the answers they agree to go on a cattle-drive, moving cattle from New Mexico to Colorado. During their trip they gain fresh insight into their lives and a renewed sense of purpose.
I have to say there's a lot that I like about the film. The basic premise seems quite plausible. The pacing and casting are supurb. As a musician, I have to say that I love the musical score that goes with it. The composer does a great job of recapturing the feel of the old western epics that have become classics. I also love the cinematography. The landscape is truly breathtaking.
Bear in mind that this is not your typical comedy. This film deals with some very serious themes. Themes such as:
1. Moving from youth to middle-age.
2. Marital infidelity
3. Business problems
4. Frustration at work
5. A general sense of purposelessness
6. Divorce
There are a couple of scenes that stick out in my mind. The first is when Phil's infidelity is discovered. The girl came to Mitch's house while they were having a birthday party and exposed Phil to his wife and his friends. How shameful and humiliating, but quite realistic.
The other was when Phil, Mitch and Ed are riding together on the trail and each is recounting the best and worst day of their lives. We get an insight into Ed when he explains that the best day of his life was when he told his philandering father off and he never saw him again after that. A stunned Phil asks, "What was the worst day?" Ed replies, "Same day."
I know some have said that they found the sexually tainted dialogue distasteful, especially when they're trying to get Mitch to consider having an affair. I think we have to be realistic though and admit that many men and women have considered the possibility of having an affair, have discussed it with their friends and some have followed through with it. It's not right. It shouldn't happen but it does. I guess it serves as a reminder to us to cherish the relationships we have, lest they be lost. I think it's great that Mitch stuck to his guns though. He would remain faithful to his wife no matter what. Way to go Mitch!
In summary, I would say that I highly recommend this film, particularly for male audiences. Women may enjoy it too, as it might help them understand men better. Definitely not a film for young children.
Movie Review: Heads up! New Collector's Edition due out on June 3rd, 2008! Summary: 4 Stars
City Slickers, like most of the comedies I like best, works both as a vehicle for some pretty good humor and as a drama with heart, with something real at stake. Mitch (Billy Crystal) and his two best friends (Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby) are each having midlife crises in their own ways. In an effort to find themselves they join a two-week dude cattle drive adventure where they do indeed surpass their former boundaries and find more about who they really are. Jack Palance plays Curly, the imposing, tough-as-cowhide, scene-stealing trail boss. The setting allows for endless jokes about cowboys and related matters, as well as some wry comments on human nature. All the principle actors are in top form.
The new DVD release of City Slickers will have a bunch of new special features:
-- audio commentary from director Ron Underwood and stars Billy Crystal and Daniel Stern (Bruno Kirby and Jack Palance are no longer living)
-- 4 featurettes
. . . "Back in the Saddle: City Slickers Revisited"
. . . "Bringing in the Script: Writing City Slickers"
. . . "A Star is Born: An Ode to Norman" (Norman being the calf Mitch adopts)
. . . "The Real City Slickers"
-- 2 deleted scenes: "Releasing the Herd" and "A New Job"
I've always enjoyed this movie and look forward to the new features, especially the commentary. Looks like it will be a worthy special edition. Four stars for this old DVD, but the new one gets five. Amazon is taking orders for the new DVD here.
Movie Review: Get your blues in a saddle and live Summary: 4 Stars
That's a film. Some urbanites decide to go on a trek for a fortnight. They will drive a herd of cows across two states from one ranch to another, from New Mexico to Colorado. Of course they will have three professionals looking after them, the greenhorns from the cities, and a cook. But apart from that they will have to do it and play their parts properly. Of course, nothing goes the right way. So they will have to deliver a calf and kill the mother, they will have to bury their leader because he dies of a heart attack, they will have to evacuate the cook who gets drunk and nearly kills himself, they will have to bury two horses, they will have to pacify the two other professional cowboys who get drunk and become dangerous and who finally abandon them in the middle of nowhere, they will have to take over the herd and deliver it in Colorado, they will have to go ythrough a storm and cross an inflated river, they will have to do it all for the pleasure of doing it, of proving to themselves they can do it. And they will. The three men will come back home regenerated and that's exactly the aim of the game, though the other city slickers that had started with them will give up in the middle of the trek showing that it is not always a positive experience for everyone. But the film is highly entertaining and it gives us a lesson : to live in a big city is a crazy experience and we need to go back to simple and natural basics every so often just to sort out our marbles and go on living instead of just surviving.
