Movie Reviews of Cirque du Soleil - VarekaiMovie Review: Amazing as always, but......... Summary: 4 Stars
Varekai tells the story of Icarus, who flies too close to the sun and falls to the earth, to be welcomed by a cast of strange and amazing creatures. In this show, we see the "Icarian Games" played by a group of Spanish/Italian brothers who use their feet to throw each other in a most unbelievable manner. The Georgian Dance is one of my favorites, showcasing Georgian fighters as they used to defend their homeland in the high mountains of Georgia. A definite highlight of the show, and an example of how Cirque is always searching the world for news and exciting acts. The juggler is unbelievable also, using several different objects to juggle and balance, from ping pong balls in his mouth to hats being thrown boomerang style......you pretty much have to see it to believe it as it is quite simply difficult to describe in words alone. The Grand Finale is spectacular, and nothing much needs to be said, except for the fact that the room for miscalculation or error is close to zero, or serious injury is almost guaranteed.
One thing which should be mentioned is the fact that this DVD (in my opinion) pales in comparison to other Cirque DVD's as the lighting is quite dark. Other than that, the acts are fantastic, though the clown acts leave much to be desired on the DVD. I saw this show live in 2005 and it was much different than I had imagined because of improvements in these two areas. The acts as always are 5 stars, but 1 deduction for the poor lighting and the clowns who were not yet up to par with other Cirque acts. The white light contrasted with the dark simply takes away from the show on the DVD.
Also included on this disc are in-depth interviews, and a preview of the Fire Within Series.
Movie Review: Cirque du Soleil Varekai Summary: 4 Stars
I am obsessed with CdS (Cirque du Soleil) no doubt. I have seen Varekai (Live and not live.), Alergria (not live but I'm going to when it vists NYC), Quidam (Not live.), Cirque Reinvent (not live.), Saltimbanco, O and Mystere this winter, and Dralion (not live). If I could I would give it 4 and a half stars. I love it no doubt but there are some problems: First the sound is horrible. It starts off too soft and all of the sudden it gets so loud it hurts my ears and then gets softer again. Also there is a half second skip at the end of the Body Skating act but luckly the music is over by the time this happens. Overall I'd give it 4 and a half stars
Movie Review: Best film version of all the Cirque touring shows Summary: 4 Stars
If you are a fan of Cirque, this is one of the best recordings of their performances ever.
The lighting is better on this dvd than on most of the Cirque recordings. Of course, none can ever capture the magic of the live shows, but this seems to be the best historical record.
The second cd was a nice bonus, it gave an introduction to the behind-the-scenes show from Bravo (which is also available now on DVD). But on my version there were some technical glitches. Exiting and restarting seemed to take care of the problem.
Movie Review: GREAT SHOW Summary: 4 Stars
The show is awesome..but like all the shows, you HAVE to see them live. I aggree it doesn't have good editing. I think Alegria had the "best" filming so far...but it would have been nice to see more of the show as well. I hear "La Nouba" had the best fimling yet, since it was filmed by Disney this time, instead of tristar, or whoever it's been.
