Movie Review: Good things come to those that wait !
Summary: 5 Stars
When I first got this film I thought it was going to be another over-ambitious attempt to portray the 'real' life of a lesbian, her partner, friends and family. BUT what I got was a hidden treasure, the film and plot may be slow for some people especially if you are just after a 'quickie', but you are treated to a film that covers a lot of expectations, emotions and issues in people's lives. The story centres around Reena, whom everyone has already 'labelled' as to who and what she is...the 'flakey' sister, the irresponsible daughter, etc. Despite her mother's many attempts to ignore the loving relationship she has with her partner lisa, she still tries to be a good daughter, sister and friend. Then her sister gets married and finds out she cannot have a baby; after watching her sister suffer Reena decides she can help by carrying a baby for her sister. But straight away she is challenged has irresponsible and not thinking clearly. 'How can she think of having a baby when she can't cook and can hardly look after her own life and has silly dreams of being a photographer?' After several attempts with a turkey baster, she gets pregnant but by then her sister doesn't want anything to do with the idea. Her partner is finding it increasing difficult to accept her pregnant girlfriend and her flatmates are not exactly supportive in the low times when her sister stops talking to her, partner leaves her (with a great scene of the partner's mother telling her off for leaving her pregnant girlfriend). But Reena is strong and continues on with the help of her brother-in-law (the father) to carry on and give birth. Slowly she survives and gradually her partner, her family give her the support and love she needs as the birth approaches. You will laugh, you may cry but you will not be left feeling empty like several lesbian & gay themed films of recent times; wondering how good the film COULD have been because this film ends naturally at a point leaving you the viewer to decide how you want the future to be.
